667368 2008-05-12 00:39:00 XP SP3 DOES NOT include IE7, Its been mentioned lots of times in various places, Microsoft Forums, and other forums as well.

Official release from Microsoft

What Is In Service Pack 3

Windows XP SP3 includes all previously released Windows XP updates, including security updates and hotfixes, and select out-of-band releases. Windows XP SP2 was released in August 2004. Since then, Microsoft has released hundreds of updates. Windows XP SP3 includes all of these updates.Microsoft is not adding significant Windows Vista functionality to Windows XP through SP3. However, SP3 does include Network Access Protection (NAP) to help organizations that use Windows XP to take advantageof new features in the Windows Server® 2008 operating system. Further, Windows XP SP3 does not include Windows Internet Explorer 7. For more information about Internet Explorer 7, visit ledge Base article 936929 lists all other all Knowledge Base articles that Windows XP SP3 addresses.

If you want IE 7 it is advisable to install it first before installing SP3, as there has been lots of problem trying to install it after.

What some of us have done is slipstreamed IE7 into a XP SP3 CD, that works.

667369 2008-05-12 00:46:00 I've installed SP3 from the Windows Update and it was only 63mb. No problems.

667370 2008-05-12 05:59:00 Thanks guys for all the comments on SP3. I got caught out with WGA so I'm very careful on what I download these days. Grampsey Grampsey (10603)
667371 2008-05-12 10:13:00 My computer automatically downloaded SP3 weeks ago (and subsequently), but since then has refused to install it. It is possible that at the time of the initial download I didn't have any room on my hard drive (NOD32 has a habit of leaving huge temp files). Since then I have cleared 5+GB and it still won't download. Sometimes when I shut down it tells me that it has updates waiting to install, sometime it doesn't. Sometime it tries to install these updates, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it 'installs' the updates and then hangs the computer at the 'shutting down computer screen', sometimes it... You get the picture.

I think this is starting to impact on some of my high memory usage programmes. I was using Proshow Gold (slide show creation programme) yesterday, which is usually reliable, and it kept on showing the screen I was working on, but wouldn't let me access it, and then completely blanking out the screen. It would flash between the two until I got sick of waiting and did the old Ctrl-Alt-Del trick.

I thought that if I manually downloaded and installed SP3 then that might solve everything. No such luck.

Any suggestions before I pull out all my hair?

667372 2008-05-12 10:20:00 I would install ccleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com) first Sereena

Untick the Yahoo toolbar option in the install, you dont need it.

This will get rid of the temp files

So, did u download the 316mb file or the ISO??

If you did, what did it say why it didnt install?

If you've got a firewall installed disable it, and programs like Avast, if its installed.

It may help

Try using a razor first - much more effective .

667374 2008-05-12 10:37:00 Thanks for the clarification, people. I was mislead by the post on this thread that said that SP3 does install IE7. Wainuitech - I had read a different M$ info page which didn't include anything about IE7.

In any case, I won't do SP3 for a month or 2 yet - hopefully any gremlins will be sorted by then.

667375 2008-05-12 18:32:00 SP3 set up. No probs here, in fact things are pretty sweet. rob_on_guitar (4196)
667376 2008-05-12 22:31:00 I have been using it with Win XP Pro since the day it was released, and there have been no problems on any of the three computers I installed it on.

I was fully up to date with SP2 and the enormous number of updates that Microsoft has thrown at us since then, on all 3 computers. When you look at control panel - Add/Remove Programmes you will see that they have all gone, and SP3 is now listed instead. I gather SP3 doesn't actually do much more than that (unlike SP2).

Incidentally, in relation to Murray's earlier post, my main PC has an AMD CPU, and there have been no problems. The computer is a bitsa, like George Washington's axe - built by a local techie and rebuilt several times over many years.

Thanks & I'll try to remember that . ;-)

I've downloaded CCleaner as suggested by Speedy Gonzales . I was going to install it but Windows decided that it was time to install SP3 again . It went through whatever magic ritual it goes through and then ended up with:
Some updates could not be installed
The following updates were not installed:
Office XP Service Pack 3

Office XP? Maybe that's the problem . I don't have 'Office XP' . . . I think . Office 2002 yes . Are we dealing with the same thing? Maybe I'm worrying about Windows XP SP3 when it's actually the Office version I'm having problems with .

So, did u download the 316mb file or the ISO??

I haven't got the foggiest idea . I just let Microsoft lead me by the nose to where it wanted me to go .

I'll try the other suggestions when I get a spare moment . . .

Thank heavens I use Microsoft free zones Firefox and Thunderbird for Internet and email .

FAB
