667358 2008-05-10 03:27:00 Me again Speedy. Sorry to be a pain but I am still not quite sure what to download for SP3. I am running XP Pro with SP2. I have Internet Explorer v7 installed but use Firefox. I presume I download MS08-010 but that doesn't seem to be a big enough file?. What has IE to do with SP3 anyway?.

Well I think SP3 has patches for IE 6, and 7. BUT doesnt istall IE 7, or WMP.

SP3 installs patches (all of them) since SP2, which includes Windows, and IE patches.

And the 316mb file is SP3. Thats how big it is, unless you get the ISO which is 544MB. Or you go to the Windowsupdate site, which is 66 mb or something.

Only diff between the 3, is the windowsupdate file you would have to stay online to download whatever.

The other 2, you can download then run the 316mb file. Or burn the ISO, then install it on or offline.

667359 2008-05-10 03:29:00 SP3 does install IE7 and once done you cannot role back to IE6. Murray P (44)
667360 2008-05-10 03:31:00 I spose it depends on WHICH SP3 install you installed then .

Because the one I downloaded didnt install IE 7 .

I slipstreamed IE 7 with WMP 11 with the WMP 11 updates .

667361 2008-05-10 03:35:00 if you manually run your windows update it will pick up SP3 and download / install it, size approx 66Mb.

If you go To This page (www.microsoft.com) you can download the complete Install file, 316Mb, simply download it, once finished downloading, double click the file, and follow onscreen instructions. Many thanks. SP3 installed. It only took 35 minutes to D/L and install so wasn't too painful. I guess it wouldn't do any harm to put it on a CD should I need to reinstall Windows XP at some stage?.

667362 2008-05-10 03:37:00 Be careful of installing XP SP3 on OEM systems with AMD CPUs. Apperently 100s are experiencing BSODS and endless reboots, which may be something to do with the generic Intel power management drivers many OEMs ship with the XP HDD images swhich is normally not activated via a reg key in AMD machines but with SP3 still does and sends the machine apesh1t.Thanks for advice but not OEM here so hope no problems. Time will tell eh?. Pato (2463)

667364 2008-05-10 04:07:00 An ISO is a CD or DVD image . (similar to recovery cd's or dvds) .

Which is why you usually have an option to burn cd's or dvd's on a system (like HP or Dell), if they've got a recovery partition to CD or DVD .

The program in Windows creates a bootable cd/dvd for whatever system so when you refomat, everything (for the system, not all the XP updates) get installed .

You need a cd / dvd burner, it needs to be burned to a cd, so you can use it .

Its similar to a zipped, or rarred file . But on a bigger scale (or in this case, a bigger file) .

All its doing is compressing a bunch of files into one file . To save you uploading 10 million single files to somewhere or to someone

An ISO is usually also bootable (well depending on who made the ISO that is and whether they know how to make it bootable)

667365 2008-05-10 04:29:00 I spose it depends on WHICH SP3 install you installed then .

Because the one I downloaded didn't install IE 7 .

I slipstreamed IE 7 with WMP 11 with the WMP 11 updates . Ditto to those comments, downloaded SP3 on PC's that had IE7 & WMP already installed and they worked fine .

The separate 316Mb doesn't include IE7, so it pays to install IE if you want before installing the Service Pack other wise it can cause problems ( as I have found out), or as speedy did (like wise for me) slipstream IE7 into a CD .

667366 2008-05-12 00:20:00 From Speedy's and Murray P's posts above I take it that some downloads of SP3 install IE 7 and others don't. Which one does, as I would like to install SP3 later (when some of the dross has been removed) using auto download but I don't want IE7?

And thanks for the tipoffs about the hooks - I don't want Windows firewall or auto download and install.

667367 2008-05-12 00:31:00 No version of SP3 installs IE 7, or WMP 11.

You'll have to install both after, or slipstream both. So they get installed once you install XP

I tried the 316MB (which doesnt install IE 7, or WMP 11).

And the ISO (altho, after I burned the ISO, I didnt use it, since SP3 was already installed).
