2008-05-11 03:16:00 | Hows this then, I f'matt'd card & re-shot at Large/Fine but no-go . . . . so put the same card in old-faithful Minolta A2, re-formatted & reshot at Lg/fine, & it read/opened OK . . . tried same with other card that normally lives in the A2, & the same error thing happened again with it in the d300 . I'll try reloading the MS P/E, & failing that go try Picasa 2 or somesuch small file manager . . | BrooC (5937) | |
2008-05-11 03:29:00 | If I am reading this correctly, it is only when you use your new camera that you get the error message? Can you format the memory card in the old camera, take some pictures and then take some pictures using the new camera (without re-formatting it) and see what happens? Make sure you know what photos were taken with which camera. Could be a fault with the new camera.

2008-05-11 04:05:00 | Roger that Hooston, good diagnostic BUT . . . P/E will open the shots from the A2, but not from the d300 (they write to different folders on the card, so ID is easy) . An odd thing is that P/E will show thumbnails (ie graphics, not icon) for ALL the files, but will only properly 'open' the ones from the older camera . . I've been told from a Nikon forum that there is (or 'should not' be) anything in the d300 file-writing format that would cause this . . . . . | BrooC (5937) | |
2008-05-11 07:31:00 | . . . I tried loading 'Windows Picture & Fax' as default viewer, & it opens the pics without a hitch (fairly fast) . . . as also does MS Paint, (but faster) . . . . & Picture Viewer too (slower) . . . . but as soon as I 'ask them' to open Photo Editor up pops the 'File Too Large' error message . . . . grrrr . . . | BrooC (5937) | |
2008-05-11 07:44:00 | Since it looks like the Nikon D300 can be updated with firmware, have you tried updating it, to see if it makes a diff? | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |
2008-05-11 08:09:00 | . . I hadnt looked down that avenue yet as the cam is near-new & likely has the current firmware anyway, but i'll keep that'n in mind . . . I figure the daemons on the d300 list woulda mentioned that as a something to run if it was likely . | BrooC (5937) | |
2008-05-11 08:28:00 | I would give up on the Microsoft Photo Editor, which I use all the time, yes, even with having Photoshop Elements, LOL and try Irfanview that is a free pretty small program, that I 'always' use for batch editing, thumbnail viewing etc. Yep, even though I own 3 legit photo programs, I also have Picassa, but use Irfanview the most out of any of them for day to day stuff.

2008-05-11 08:32:00 | Ps, I just found this in Microsoft Photo Editor's help I have an image that Photo Editor can't open. If Photo Editor doesn't open an image, the problem may be one of the following: · The proper import filter may not be installed on your computer. To install the graphics import filter you need, run Setup and add the filter. · The image may have been saved in a variant of a graphics file format. Some file formats, especially TIFF and some others, are adapted for specialized purposes. Some of the adaptations are not recognized by standard import filters. Usually these images can be opened only by the program that created them.

Seems like you just can't beat good old Photoshop for opening up images. ;) |
