1357255 2005-08-30 07:08:00 Bah @ Linux fanatics. They're almost as bad as Mac Mads.

I didn't read the article... if it's a p*** take then fine. But Windows (esp XP) gives me my jollies any day.

1357256 2005-08-30 07:40:00 I wonder if any of the forum windows users read the article BM, the fish would not only bite, they would take the rod and boat as well  beama (111)
1357257 2005-08-30 07:42:00 heh my list of cool reasons to use linux..

1. You can have really out of there desktop looks. No one will steal your PC.

2. You can then join your local LUG.

3. It isn't Windows.

4. Free stuff.

5. You can become a zealot

1357259 2005-08-30 10:08:00 [QUOTE=Graham L]I don't care. I'll stick to my "mistaken and frankly zealous" opinions. (Whatever does that mean?).

I use Linux because it's a real OS, it's fast, it's easy to use and I understand it. It doesn't do things to me; it does things for me.

Agreed. BUT! Real OS yes. Fast yes. Easy to use maybe if you used MSDos or Unix and know about command line interfaces. Generally speaking Linux will not do things to TO you that is agreed. Linux will do things for you is also agreed. On the other hand I find that people attempting to use Linux as their ONLY O/S have hardware problems generally with WinModems. People using Linux can't agree about which distribution is the right one for other people wishing to try Linux. Now agreed that people can use the likes of Knoppix and boot off the CD and not even installed on the hard drive or drives at this point.

I use Windows reluctantly because I use some cross-platform compilers and other software which is Windows-only, and I can't be bothered with emulators.

I use Windows because a fairly large percentage of the world actually uses Windows in some version as their ONLY operating system. I got dragged licking and screaming into windows 3.11 at work because I worked and got paid and that is what they used. At that time I used MSDos 6.22 at home and could do all I wanted.

I don't want Linux to look like Windows. I don't want it to "work" like Windows. I want it to work predictably. That means I don't want it to be "intutive". I don't want it to be "user friendly". I don't want it to automatically install new hardware. I don't want it to complain at length if I unplug hardware. I want it to do what I tell it to do. I'm happy to tell the OS when I've installed something.

But in the real world most people use a version of windows. Agreed that "intuitive" is a load of old cobblers. It appears to be though that user friendly is what people want. I dont want linux to look like Windows and I dont want windows to look like linux.

If vinref doesn't like Linux, that's fine. It's not compulsory. But don't ask me to like Windows. That's not compulsory either.

I like Linux and use it from time to time but I have to say that it would not be my ONLY O/S.

1357260 2005-08-30 10:34:00 Give me OS/2 any day...We've got a shrink wrapped copy of OS/2 at work. Still in mint condition.

Should put it on eBay.

1357261 2005-08-30 10:48:00 I can think of 5 reasons not to use Linux

1 - You like to pay through the teeth for software, half of which doesn't do the job its supposed to
2 - Someone made millions out of Windows, so it must be perfect
3 - You like to go to Microsofts Update site because you have nothing better to do than watch grass grow
4 - You don't like to think when you install an application - its just double-click ok ok ok .. done
5 - Your friendly computer technician would go broke :)
