384474 2005-08-29 09:34:00 Google taking over the universe?
No, its all speculation. The only "fact" is that an "insider" claims that google are buying up surplis fibre all over the states. IF they are, then maybe that will help them do what they do best, scan the whole WWW every few days? Maybe this, maybe that, maybe "googlenet"

Speculation. Nothing but.

Compare googles servers with those of yahoo, whose servers behave like they've had a bit too much to smoke. Perhaps Google want's to keep it so there's are super acessable, even in congested times.

384475 2005-08-29 09:40:00 im at peace with it, google gives out heaps of free stuff like email(the best mail you can get) and a very good search engine, and i bet there is more on the way..... Prescott (11)
384476 2005-08-29 14:11:00 Thats the difference between Google and Microsoft so far

Take Gmail for example:
Not only is it free, its HEAPS bigger than the 2mb Mailbox i had with hotmail
Ads are smaller

GoogleTalk:
Built on Open standards, with no advertisments in the product
You're not forced to use the GoogleTalk client itself
Clear + Free Voice calling

Have they charged for any of this? Have they bombarded you with massive ads on every screen? Have they offered you a million and one useless E-Zines? Heck, they've even hired some of the lead Firefox programmers, just to make sure they get a good/secure/fast browser!

If they bring out an OS, I'll be one of the first to try it ;)

384477 2005-08-29 22:39:00 A "parallel internet"? With its own infrastructure, protocols and communities separate from the internet as we know now?

That's probably too much for even the likes of Google to attempt. It is almost certainly an access system like a very large, distributed, wireless, and knowing Google, free, ISP. It may be funded by advertising, but maybe Google can somehow pull off a completely free, high-speed ISP with all that "dark" surplus fibre.

And then see what the likes of Telecom and Telstra (in Australia) would do in the face of that threat. Here in Australia iinet (owner of iHug) has now rolled out some fancy system dedicated to free and (very) cheap VOIP use. The Telstra people are shifting uncomfortably in their plush leather seats...
