2005-09-02 06:10:00 | I know. Linux is nice and powerful for someone who knows how to use it (Hence the hummer), but for someone who's used to everything being there and knows what buttons to press, there isn't any point getting her to switch from the small car she has (The honda), which is what I hoped to be getting at with the car anology :D But yes, if you can provide programs that look exactly like Internet Explorer, Outlook Express and Microsoft works (!) that are opensource/free, I'd be more than happy to get her to switch. It's just while there are alternatives, they are likley to alienate her

2005-09-02 07:00:00 | So your not going to except the challenge? OK, my "point and click" system remains uncompromised without any added security or updates.. La la la..... la la la :D Seriously though.. if you wanted i have a ****load of viri sent to me that i could fish out, and if you were prepared to set up an UNPATCHED windows system with no RECENT UPDATES and you also turned your YEARS OF EXPERIANCE off, i'd just about garantee i'd have infected it just by sending you some lovely important stuff that you really should open, complete with notices saying it was checked by AVG, and all the works to panic and fool the new user. Theres some evidence that connecting such a system to the net may have it compromised within an hour, with or without someone deliberatly testing its weaknesses, or even operating it. The only thing keeping your system secure is constant vigilence in the form of AV and general updates combined with you knowing that the "important attachments" i could send you are not to be opened. These protections are not the sort of thing an innocent new user has. Sheesh... My moms laptop lasted less than 6 months before it was off to the shop for a repair that she couldn't explain to me, presumably reformatting and a fresh install of the OS. This is hassle free easy computing? :groan: Yeah right? You may know about Linux but you obviously don't know as much as you think you do about Windows. I do not collect viruses so I have none to send you even if I was petty and childish enough to such a stupid thing. Secondly I have never installed an update on this PC ever. Nor do I intend to. Nor do I run AVG or any other antivirus. Thats not to say I haven't ever installed one and checked...I do now and then, and it never finds anything. But it doesn't stay installed. Likewise spyware. From what I read on the latest Linux virus site the fix seems to me to be an UPDATE. Anyway its like talking to a religious maniac - pointless so I'm not bothering to come back to this thread now.

Tell me also why Vista is adopting more of the linux filesystem and user permission schematics if its so shockingly bad!? Religious maniac?! Pot... Kettle... Black.....? |

2005-09-02 08:23:00 | ... you obviously don't know as much as you think you do about Windows..I know jack about windows. Never claimed to know much about it either, it's far too hard for me and my limited skills. However i do see a heap of people running, or trying to run infected machines. Secondly I have never installed an update on this PC ever. Nor do I intend to. Nor do I run AVG or any other antivirus. What little i do know of windows, and the problems people have with it suggests that you are very very lucky

2005-09-02 08:43:00 | Haven't read all the posts but I am getting the general gist of it so far. To add my :2cents: I had upgraded my PC and installed XP (paid for but still installed on my old computer) I put that computer in my two girls bedroom to use and had it connected for a few months. Networked nicely via adsl modem both surfing the net, sharing files etc. One day my girl said "I hate Windows", for which I replied I could put Xandros (free version) if she wanted and she gleefully agreed. Installation was easy and modem detected automatically. Installed Firefox and left her to it. It does exactly what she wants, plays music, plays dvd's and has internet access. Rather than inundate them with what it can or cant do I am just going to let them use it. They are purely point and click and so far they have not had any problems so far. BTW they are 7 & 5 years old.

2005-09-02 22:18:00 | www.google.co.nz And I don't have a mania for WIndows. Not even slightly. I've said it before - its because it IS the gaming O/s.

2005-09-02 22:28:00 | Sadly you're right, and its a bit of a catch22. People wont use Linux because there's not enough gaming support Developers wont portgames to Linux because there's not enough gamers using it So if you think about it, im a trend pioneer ;)
