I'm sure you're not silly enough to launch an emailed virus . Nor would I be . Nor could you infect my WIndows PC either .

1357336 2005-09-02 04:19:00 I run everything thats sent to me, Im blissfully ignorant just like Edwards grandparents would be.

Think about it... Linux security is what they _need_!
Windows "user-friendlyness" is something that they need also.

This is why Xandros OCE would be ideal. They're not going to do any more than just Emails etc right? Maybe the odd game of solitaire and things, but certainly nothing to call home about because the Start menu is now called Launch.

Email me a Virus, I'll try and run it. Hell I'll even try and infect myself with Wine/Cedega!

1357337 2005-09-02 04:57:00 Come on now Edward, play fair, when is the person you site in your example going to purchase and install their own PCI modem? That was what hamstar was descibing the install process for.

Still dosen't dismiss the fact that for her, it's like trying to drive a hummer after her Ford Focus

Chill: I think we _may_ just be missing the point here. It's not that she needs linux security, it's that she dosen't need the hassle of learning how to use another operating system, with virtually no support (I'm her first port of call, and even I have no idea how to do things remotely exotic on Linux)

1357338 2005-09-02 05:17:00 I'm sure you're not silly enough to launch an emailed virus . Nor would I be . Nor could you infect my WIndows PC either . So your not going to except the challenge? OK, my "point and click" system remains uncompromised without any added security or updates . . La la la . . . . . la la la :D

Seriously though . . if you wanted i have a ****load of viri sent to me that i could fish out, and if you were prepared to set up an UNPATCHED windows system with no RECENT UPDATES and you also turned your YEARS OF EXPERIANCE off, i'd just about garantee i'd have infected it just by sending you some lovely important stuff that you really should open, complete with notices saying it was checked by AVG, and all the works to panic and fool the new user .

Theres some evidence that connecting such a system to the net may have it compromised within an hour, with or without someone deliberatly testing its weaknesses, or even operating it .

The only thing keeping your system secure is constant vigilence in the form of AV and general updates combined with you knowing that the "important attachments" i could send you are not to be opened . These protections are not the sort of thing an innocent new user has . Sheesh . . . My moms laptop lasted less than 6 months before it was off to the shop for a repair that she couldn't explain to me, presumably reformatting and a fresh install of the OS .

This is hassle free easy computing? :groan: Yeah right?

1357339 2005-09-02 05:19:00 ....(I'm her first port of call, and even I have no idea how to do things remotely exotic on Linux)But exactly what "exotic" things would she wish to do? personthingy (1670)
1357340 2005-09-02 05:33:00 Exactly!

The only time my family come to me for help is after a virus infection, slowdown of the PC (Due to malware), spyware, trojans, hijackers, updates..

If you remove the possibility of those, you remove the need for "SOS" calls dont you :)

1357341 2005-09-02 05:58:00 I'm a little confused Edward,

I don't know your grandmother, but I assumed from your first post that she was a first time computer user, that had just purchased a dell from the warehouse .

I also assumed that she wanted to do what I associate with grandma computers, which is: E-Mail, Browse the web, and possibly make a newsletter for whatever intrest group she is associated with .

But from your last post it would seem that she isn't a new user at all, she already knows how to use these programs, and the main issue facing her is relearning a new program . In which case the problem is similar to the problems faced by those switch from IE to Firefox . The benifits are similar too, less nasty software . :) . You don't let her use IE do you?

I like car metafores though . In my car metafore I would compare your gradma's windows install you last described as to a Mexican Built clone SUV that has had an expert mechanic go over it, and installed 3rd party seatbelts, airbags, bullbars and a rollcage all of which don't fit quite right, but the mechanic has done a very good job . Whereas linux is more like a smaller European SUV that came with all that fitted at the factory .
