384162 2005-08-27 21:20:00 Is there a way that an email attachment can be encrypted in a self-extracting format so that all the recipient has to do is enter a password to see the contents (without first installing the encryption program)?

Any freebie programs that will do this?

Hmmmmnnnn..... a cryptic answer ! !

Now I am not sure if you are just pulling my leg, but yes, something like a zip file with a password. As long as it is easy - e.g. click on the attachment and a password box appears, enter password, the document appears.

All you have to do is remember it to open it when u go to extract it

384166 2005-08-28 01:57:00 winzip encryption can be cracked in 5 seconds (well maybe not that quick). Its useless.

use pretty good privacy (PGP).

384167 2005-08-28 03:40:00 The Winzip stuff, WinRAR... all breakable with quick/easy brute force + dictionary attacks.

PGP was designed for this sort of thing!

384168 2005-08-28 08:31:00 Pretty Good Privacy :

Pros:
Integration with Outlook/Outlook Express and Eudora
Easy to setup and use

Cons:
Correspondents need to exchange public keys
Freeware version missing a few utilities

Since I use Pegasus Mail and GMail, it seems PGP is out for me.
BTW, how does one "exchange public keys"?

The question was freebie. Correct me if I'm wrong but WinZip is shareware is it not?

This means you PAY if you find the program useful.

I spent a fair bit of time elaborating on this and found that I have a 15 minute time limit to add to my original post.

You can just encrypt a file, and then send it as an attachment using any mail client or webmail .

You exchange public keys out in the open, usually by publishing them on a key repository . There is no need to hide the public keys - that's why they are public . You must keep the private key absolutely safe though .

If you want to send a message that only the intended recipient can read, you encrypt it with his/her public key, and they he/she can only decrypt it with their private key . If you want the intended recipient to be sure it is from you and not an impersonator, then you must also encrypt it with your private key so that it can only be decrypted with your public key .

The private key cannot be inferred or calculated or otherwise derived from your public key (within reasonable means) . The likelihood that two public or two private keys are the same is just shy of being impossible .
