I think a recent Windows 10 update caused this. We have 2 XP machines and 2 Win10 machines on our LAN.
Suddenly machine J is asking for a Username and password. It had neither.. or has neither.
How can we get rid of that dialog and be able to explore back into mapped drives etc ? We do not want passwords.
Machine J can see the other three ok but they all get User/Pass request trying to access it.

Assuming its On Windows 10, in the search, which is right next to the start button (or via control Panel) type in network, open network and sharing --Top Left, click on Change Advanced Sharing Settings, Scroll down to bottom of page, under All networks - Expand out, select turnoff password protected sharing - Click Save changes.

1426566 2016-09-30 21:31:00 I didn't work after last night's upgrade. I don't normally turn my 'puter off, and when I came home about 8ish, there was this screen wanting this pesky password again! What am I doing wrong?

PS - I did go back to check that I had followed the instructions. :)

1426567 2016-10-02 01:41:00 Best check on both W10 Machines that the option is not reselected.

Theres generally only a couple of reason its asking for passwords. Ones already been mentioned. The other is if you are using a computer that when you start you sign in with a email address, which = requires a password. (you'd be surprised how many people say "No I don't have a password") == guess what's discovered when starting ;) If using an email address theres a way to fix it asking but whats entered when starting is important for it to work.

Another reason could be they are on different workgroups.
The folders may not be shared fully.

1426568 2016-10-02 02:13:00 I think my desk top is signing on with a email address (how that happened I don't know...). I know it is asking for my Microsoft login password.
I know they both are on the same work group, with folders shared (or at least the ones I want/need).

So - pretty please - some clues as to what I need to change? Ta.

1426569 2016-10-02 02:20:00 Ah yes - I see I am set up as the administrator - and therefore must have a password. This never used to happen to me! The laptop is the other setting (I'm presuming). But then I don't fiddle with it as much, just take it on holiday or to the Camera Club, so there's not much on it. R.M. (561)
1426570 2016-10-02 03:08:00 To change a computer back to a local account from Email -- From Settings /Account, select Local Account, you'll need to enter your password again, and when switching leave the password options blank ( assuming it never had any before) on restart you'll be back to a local account.

The other options is when trying to access the shared folder from another, in the user name type in the email address & Password - should let you in.

What will have happened is when signing into something ( store, mail app etc) it will have wanted your MS account, you have to look carefully, but when doing that you have the option to sign into just that app, not the change the whole Computer.

There is also another option, bit more indepth and helps if you have a static IP address on your LAN for the device. (Found this one out when my insider PC couldn't access the NAS devices since it uses a email address.)
