2016-09-14 01:02:00 | Some ISP's are starting to offer deals on Gb fibre 1000/500 , for home & small office In the real world, in NZ ,for home & small office, is Gb even usefull. ? There will allways be the bottleneck somewhere down the line, and the chances of home users finding services/sites that will feed out the data at that sustained speed seem unlikely . Then theres the bottleneck of HD read/write speeds (unless you have SSD) And will Gbs also be for international downloads ? Perhaps video streaming, but what sites will stream to multiple users at that speed ?

2016-09-14 01:42:00 | Not necessary for the majority of people, also the international speeds from a lot of providers, especially the likes of My Republic (oversubscribed tossers), will still be less than 15Mbps at peak times...however the hardware can do it, so why not. When we get this new undersea cable, and as long as you are with a provider who hasn't totally oversubscribed it's international bandwidth, you could see some pretty impressive international speeds. :2cents: I can see the complaints now from people on 2.4 GHz wireless on gigabit fibre only getting 40Mbps....

2016-09-14 02:25:00 | Agree with everything said so far. I know it wouldn't make my life any better but I guess there must be some advantage to heavy/multiple users. Not prepared to pay more for it - tight b...tard! 100/20 superfine for me.

2016-09-14 03:09:00 | I'm currently on 100/20. Even at peak times, I still get 100mbps. My Republic were basically the laughing stock of ISPs when this came out in June: truenet.nz 16mbps... What's the point of even going from 100 to 200mbps if your ISP is going to be the "bottleneck" and not let you get the full 100mbps? Gigabit? My Republic are dreaming! From an ISP perspective, the usage patterns are usually quite similar with gigabit compared to those on the 100/20 plans, basically there's a small surge while somebody is downloading something, but it's not like most people stay at 100mbps 24/7 whoring it up. Where you can get Gigabit, if it's not going to be a big price increase, and you have solid hardware (Such as gigabit to a Desktop), then why not? If you're mostly just using WiFi, stick with 100/20, coz even on 802.11ac there's far less of a chance of you exceeding that. What I would say is MOST home users will do better to get themselves something along the lines of an Archer C7 router and a good ISP on a 100/20 that lets them attain that speed all the time.

2016-09-14 04:08:00 | I'm currently on 100/20 . Even at peak times, I still get 100mbps . , basically there's a small surge while somebody is downloading something, but it's not like most people stay at 100mbps 24/7 whoring it up . . Still goes back to where its coming from as well . Most of the time I can top out my downloads, BUT the catch is I have to use a download manager like IDM, that grabs feeds from several places (sometimes 10 -15 +) all at the same time Then I can top out the download speed . If its coming from Within NZ then it hovers about 80% top speed, but overseas --yeah-Nar ;) A really good example -- Doing a forced upgrade to W10 1607, normally to download a W10 ISO is only a few minutes, but doing Via the upgrade program from MS -- 2 hours and counting currently at 66 % :sleep So theres a bottle neck someplace . Edited: someone must have heard me LOL its suddenly decided to take off :clap On topic -- Really unless a place/home is doing lots of downloads or uploads all the time its really a waste of money, general web usage you'll never see the difference because most wouldn't be maxing out their current capabilities . Might be ok for bragging rights I guess ;)
