1423407 2016-07-19 10:48:00 HUsband filled up the petrol car with diesel. Tried starting it for ages......it cranked but wouldn't fire.

Been to garage, had fuel drained and new petrol added. Haven't changed spark plugs or fuel filter yet and it sounds ****ed.

Knocking as well as just the expected smoke - from both ends...any damage you think?

1996 Carib.

1423409 2016-07-19 18:56:00 Sounds like it was driven till it stopped
Remove fuel line were ever it is in engine bay attach another hose to it to get the fuel away from engine bay and crank over to rid the remaining diesel out, clean or replace the plugs and also replace the fuel filter
should go after this, just as well it was not Petrol in a diesel vehicle

1423410 2016-07-19 19:36:00 Shouldn't be any permanent damage and the plugs should be fine, not sure about the filter but I wouldn't expect that to be a problem either. I'm not a mechanic though so there will probably be better advice than mine. I just recall from my brief career as a service station employee that it usually doesn't hurt anything, the diesel should work it's way out eventually if you don't want to do it how LAwrence suggested, but it could take a little while.

As Lawrence hinted at the other way round is much more damaging, diesel vehicles do not respond well to petrol.

1423411 2016-07-19 20:07:00 Is the engine a fuel injected or carburettor model?

And when you say “just the expected smoke - from both ends” does that mean there is smoke within the engine bay?

1423412 2016-07-19 20:28:00 He didn't drive it. You can't start with diesel in it...he had just tried to...it cranked but wouldn't start.

Smoke from exhaust, smoke from engine thingy - don't know what it's called - it was backfiring....
It's injected. No carb.

1423413 2016-07-19 22:28:00 probably need to clean the spark plugs as well. tweak'e (69)
1423414 2016-07-20 01:02:00 Spark plugs and fuel filter replaced.
It's drivable now, still smokey but not as bad and lost that nasty sounding rattle-bang out of the motor.

1423416 2016-07-20 01:18:00 I worked in a service station some years back (1958) when self service was not common. A chap drove in and said, "I'll help myself, will I?" "No." I said. "I'll be with you in a minute, just as soon as I have finished with this customer." But he helped himself anyway. I got to him just as he hung up the pump. I said, "Is that a diesel car? I've heard about them but I did not know there were any diesel cars in the country." "Oh no," he said. "It's not diesel." "Well," I replied, "you've just put diesel in it. Don't attempt to start it. Just push it over to the grass and we'll drain the tank," which we did, then pushed it back and filled it with petrol. When I told him how much it would cost he said, "Oh no, I'm not paying for the diesel," and gave me just enough for the petrol and went to drive away only to find his keys missing. "You can have the keys back as soon as you pay for the diesel," I said. I was only young at the time (13) so I had the boss come over, told him the story, and he backed me up. So he finally paid up mumbling all the while.

Most people are honest and will accept that it was their fault, but now and then you come across one that will try to do you and of course, being young, I had no credibility. Luckily I was able to rely on the boss.
