1426218 2016-09-21 04:09:00 That's a joke in case you didn't get it. (obviously don't get it)

Hate to say it but ever since you started using Linux the comments on some windows related posts are simply rubbishing windows, trying to say Linux is better, example the first post in this thread, which is why this thread was hijacked to its current state.

As for Linux -- Bet you didn't know I have 2 servers here that have been used for several years, Linux based, and work fine, I know enough about it to get them working as I want. So to assume I only use windows -- Best get the facts right first.

Sorry about not getting the Joke. 7462

And Windows is the reason I'm changing to Linux because I've experienced the same shite as pctek.

Just curious -- When you enter your Product Key into a google search, like I suggested as few posts back, what is the response / result from Google. -Please don't ignore th question since its relating to this thread.

1426220 2016-09-21 04:51:00 Can't say I care about comparisons with Linux, nor arguments about MS.

The key is genuine, the fixes on the net don't work.
Activation does, I could run a repair, but that would stuff up the SP 1 wouldn't it?

Or not?

Or not? If you ran a repair install and the DVD had SP 1 already then no it shouldn't.
BUT you then have to watch out to make sure the DVD would accept the licence code to start with. Have had it in the past some early versions of W7 (pre SP1) wouldn't work on a DVD with SP1 embedded. Had to install a early version the install SP1.

How much is the son in love with the gaming ;) Meaning what you can try, throw in another HDD, install W7 Wsp1 from fresh, make sure it holds the activation. Assuming it does then you know its some sort of corruption or some program installed causing the problem.

May as well get to the cause of the problem instead of mucking about going in circles. If you don't have a W7 wSP1 DVD get one from www.microsoft.com

Edit: in fact that site will confirm if it can see it as legal, or if there's some other Reason.

1426222 2016-09-21 05:57:00 Just adding to above, using that link, if your key is OEM, not volume, enterprise, or any other type eg: MSDN then you'll get the following option /language/ then version X86 or X64

that official & download site would never accept OEM lic keys.
Has that changed, or is it still retail keys only ?

Repair install for 7 , is there such a thing ?
Doesnt it wipe user profiles/registry etc ?

1426224 2016-09-21 06:59:00 Has nobody noticed the freudian slip in the MS windows in this thread?------------------------------Windows is not genuineYour computer might not be running a counterfeit copy of Windows.------------------------------CheersBilly 8-{)Not that big of a deal, it avoids blaming the user - and for average Joe, it likely isn't the user's fault anyway. :) pcuser42 (130)

You may recall that I gave you the key some time ago through another thread by PM .

You googled it and said it was not genuine .

However, Speccy gives a completely different key to the one I gave you .

I've never tested that and the drive has been removed .

The real issue is Microsoft nagged and nagged me to upgrade to Win10, because I was entitled to, but I didn't because Win 10 doesn't support Media Center .

So then they then pull this shite .

I had the same problem years ago in the XP days when they brought out WGA (Commonly known as "Windows Genuine Disadvantage) and sneaked it into an update .

Anyway, it claimed my Office programme was illegitimate so that got me going . A Microsoft guy in NZ (I think) got the message via phone and the matter was sorted .

Reminds me of a mate that owned a large Automotive franchise .

They sold a very expensive Tractor part, but Parts couldn't remember whom to, so the smart trick was, because they only had three clients who had this model tractor, they would Invoice all three of them and when two bitched they would apologise profusely and the one that didn't was the right one .

Clever thinking, but all three paid, now what?

That site linked -- Yes does accept OEM keys - BUT depends on What type of OEM, Theres two types, from the big manufactures or OEM from shops, the Shop ones work fine. Cant See PCTek buying name brand PC's somehow ;)

Repair install has to be done from within windows while its running, not like XP where you could boot from the CD. www.sevenforums.com It should keep all data user profiles (Picture 11) etc., but like ANY upgrade /repair pays to make an image of the current OS/Programs/Data first, just in case it all turns pear shaped for some reason.

Right I remember vaguely, got to remember I deal with hundreds of people, cant remember every ones details :) - I found the PM /Conversation, the Key sent was a a Factory Default key, these are used by the manufactures when they build computers, (in plain English - no tech) they have images of the OS/Programs/ Crap, Lets say they they build 1000 computers, the image is dropped onto the same 1000 computers, but because they have a special licence they can use it multi times .

The type of key / method they use is called SLP, or System Locked Pre-Installation . If you used any Recovery DVD/Media that came with the computer or purchased from the manufacture then it includes this SLP licence .
Trying to use the SLP licence key on a fresh install doesn't include the special files the manufactures use . It will install OK but wont activate - hence it comes up as non-genuine . If a person was to call Microsoft, they simply advise to use the COA that was legally meant to be on the case .

The manufactures don't have people sitting entering 1000's of different keys on each and every computer built .

The second part -- Speccy -- Have no idea what its reading  I just fired up a customers W7 I have at the moment (one I built several years ago) he wants it upgraded to W10-

Note: as of yesterday you can still use a W7 key to install and upgrade to W10 and it activates .

Anyway - The key that's installed, a Legit W7 I provided and the COA is still on the side of the case shows correctly on 3 different key readers -- Installed Speccy to see -- Completely different key ???? So No damn Idea why .

Win 10 doesn't support Media Center Officially it doesn't -- Unoffically it can be made to work, but I dumped it and now use Kodi, far better program way more options and features, there are several others as well . PS: Kodi runs on just about every OS there is  Windows, Linux, iOS, Android - and several others .
