1423833 2016-09-05 23:52:00 By the year 'dot', the first Wireless Telegraphy act in the UK was 1904.

A licence was required to use a crystal set, and at one time a separate licence was required for a portable wireless set. (In those days a battery valve 'portable radio' was the size of a washing machine :) )It was quite late on that having a TV licence was deemed to cover radio as well, but for a time with the advent of transistor radios the law was being broken by millions because they didn't have a portable radio licence. Eventually the idiocy of that part of the law was recognised, the act was changed yet once more and people could carry their radios around without being criminals !
