1424251 2016-08-10 11:38:00 I was going to change the title of this thread to "Do you still use a phone?"

It was supposed to be about UFB uptake.

Digby, after the quakes we had to move out for 5 weeks for home repairs and the commercial units in North Brighton were on ufb/voip phone.

That phone's performance was diabolical to say the least and that's one reason I should have mentioned phones in the earlier post. DIABOLICAL.

1424252 2016-08-10 19:54:00 All this talk of copper landlines disappearing.....

I can see that they will, as more and more people go mobile and skype etc. (and, dare I say it, as the older generations die out - I am now one).

But what about big companies and offices, that have many phones in their building with a big exchange?
Can they go without copper ?

1424254 2016-08-11 19:51:00 I await Vodafone fitting fibre.

Same price as adsl from Slingshot, so off we go.

They don't fit Fibre anywhere. It's Chorus for almost all the country, nowhere Vodafone AFAIK, they all just get it from Chorus

They're digging up our street and laying cables now. Friends round the corner got a pathetic 15Mbps, so no better than ADSL2. Another was on the 30 plan, so don't really think all the drama is worth it for basically doubling their speed.
Shitty ISP. 100%. That's all. Get a better one.
truenet.nz

What the story with medical alarms? I sense a headache coming if we sign up.
Sorta. Needs an "ATA Adapter"

Well I've got it and it's no better than ADSL, plus you could be without a phone for a week while they sort things out.
Again, shitty ISP, that is all. Get a better one.

I see the government is raving on about the number of UFB connections. (24%)
Which is still pretty terrible, that's 24% of all the people who can CURRENTLY get it

That is good, but I just wish they had not given the lion's share to Chorus.
Chorus are one of the better LFC's to work with, out of the lot, speaking from experience.

1424256 2016-08-13 23:56:00 I am stuck with Vodafone for 12 months or pay $200 for installation fee. Cicero (40)
1424257 2016-08-13 23:59:00 Northpower have been the Whangarei contractors to lay and connect UFB. I have heard absolutely no criticism of their services. Any problems have lain with Chorus in actually getting a final connection to work. My only remaining problem seems to be my Orcon Genius modem, which appears to be a NetComm Wireless NF4V, drops the internet connection from time to time. This would not normally be a problem except that our alarm system is now monitored over the internet. Any suggestions in fixing this? Richard (739)

Gutted :( At this stage it's probably worth paying that disconnect fee, they're really that bad compared with others.

Correct, it's the NF4V with custom firmware. They're not the most reliable routers, DHCP, DNS and the SIP service on them is prone to crashing.
Replace it with something else. You on VDSL2 or UFB?

1424259 2016-08-14 01:27:00 Hi Chill, we're on UFB 100/20 plan, and includes phone line which is why the alarm monitoring is now over the internet. Richard (739)
1424260 2016-08-14 03:49:00 I'm currently at 49 days on my TL-WR1043ND running Gargoyle, hasn't missed a beat, pushing just shy of 900GB through, with 19 currently connected devices.
Only thing is you'd have to get yourself a separate ATA Adapter (Probably a good idea anyways - As the one in the Genius regularly dies) such as this:
