1426382 2016-09-23 10:27:00 Have dropped Classic shell since the Anniversary update as it is now more usable and can be configured to how you want Lawrence (2987)
1426383 2016-09-23 10:35:00 B.M Just to advise on some of your points.
The Home version of W10, by default the updates can't be turned off, same with sending data back, BUT like everything there are ways, One Home PC I have in the Workshop it never sends back anything I don't want to allow. Same with this PC, I only allow out what I want, sometimes when I say NO the app/program doesn't work fully. You just need a good firewall. (NOT a MS controlled internal)

The Windows 10 Pro version - has lots more control and settings can be changed, In Business, system admins can dictate what's going on -- The Home version - look at it like the limited version. You can alter the reg as mentioned BUT it also can have adverse side effects, so not really advised.

Why some programs like Classic Shell get removed -- When upgrading some of the default/required settings are replaced with originals, this can be because of system changes, and because its installing a whole New OS. The start menu for example has changed many times in testing (public builds only see the end results) The start menu in the older 10586 is slightly different than 14393.Theres a difference between minor updates and upgrades.

There is a way to stop the upgrades as well, BUT it takes a little bit of reg tweaking. Done it on a insider build, worked, but ended up versioning it when the following build came out.

The latest version 14931 insider build, by the time that's done the build number will be in the 15XXXX, due out first 1/4 - 2017.

1426386 2016-09-24 02:17:00 wainuitech, what firewall would you recommend for a family pc running W10 Home that is used by people of varying computer knowledge?Persoanlly I use Esets Smart Security.
Basically they have two programs, The Antivirus & Smart Security. The Smart Security has the exact same AV, + Firewall.

I set the firewall to interactive ( by default its Auto) That way ANYTHING wanting access in or out, including Microsofts "phone home" Telemetry you can stop or allow.

The default settings will allow, but interactive wont unless you say "go ahead".

Heres an example, I just removed the rule for Firefox: As you can see Smart Security has stopped it waiting for you to do something:

7480

Because I Know what it is, and do want it to work every time I open FF, I select Create rule and remember - Allow - -- It wont ever bother again, UNTIL FF upgrades, then it will pop up with a different window saying application has been altered - do you want to allow changes.

7481

If you only wanted to allow it one time, you would select the middle option.

The only thing is when it first is installed and set to interactive you'll get questions all the time, until you create rules to allow / Deny then it settles down.

BUT don't just say yes to everything, you have to look at what its asking and decide. If not sure select the middle option Remember till application Quits -- Allow or Deny. You may find if you try to open something and you select Deny - the program wont work, so close it, reopen and select allow. :)

Unless its something obvious like (as a silly example) Trojan.imahacker.vbc is trying to do something ;)

Take the MS Telemetry -- well lets just say in interactive mode you'll be surprised as WHATS "phoning home" and its NOT just Microsoft programs, it basically everything including Firefox, chrome, media Players - you name it.

1426388 2016-09-25 21:46:00 Wainui, do you also use NOD 32?
How do the two work together, alongside each other, or am I mistaken?
Peter.

As Bevy posted, it is Eset. :)

They have two versions (well they have more but that's business usage, mobile etc)

Nod32 = Antivirus
Smart Security = Antivirus + firewall.

I use both on various computers here. The workshop PC's generally only have the AV while Office computers have Smart Security.

Edited: Just in case you're wondering why I don't mention Smart Security much, SIMPLE, the question often starts out with " What is the best FREE antivirus" Free = don't generally want to pay for something more expensive. :)

1426391 2016-09-26 02:41:00 Well blow me down, I didn't know that.
I have been using Norton up until now on my two desktops and one laptop, but am now considering changing.
Thank you.
