1424241 2016-08-08 22:48:00 DSL is different because you still have a copper phone line.
Easy test when you don't need the internet for a few mins, turn off the ONT and try to use the phone.

Good point about wiring maintenance, must check my bill.

1424242 2016-08-08 23:16:00 Interesting part about the phone.

We were able to use the phone jack with the ordinary analogue phone, one thing the quakes didn't stuff up, touch key phones were usless.

Had Clear cable for years.

Fibre to the front gate, but not particularly interested in blow-lining to inside the house , shame we can't give it to someone else, seeing that we have all paid for it, rofl.

1424243 2016-08-09 00:05:00 Yup youre right it wont dial out. Just tried it. Actually I dont know why I have a phone, the flatmate uses it more than I do lol

Here the neighbour at the back got the fibre first. From the street, the main line was put in a pipe along the fence, which is between us and the neighbours.

When I got it, the guys opened up where the cable was buried and took it underground diagonally from where the cable is buried to the garden in front of the kitchen. and it goes along beside the heatpump. Drilled a hole beside the power point in the lounge and connected the ONT here

Didn't take too long at all

1424244 2016-08-09 00:10:00 The reality is , old analogue ph's are used less & less now . Im sure its a system they just want to do away with, forever.
I disconnected mine because of all the marketing calls, and only use my mobile.
Thats where the younger gen are: on mobile ph's, not landlines.

I wont have fibre connection to my Ak street untill Dec-2019. :-(
Not that I need it, I rarely max out the ADSL download speed. My bottleneck is further down the system

1424245 2016-08-09 00:30:00 I don't actually have a landline, just naked fibre broadband and a cellphone and that works for me. A lot of people have started to go the same way. However landlines will not disappear any time soon, they are just changing to different technologies.

It's hard to justify making an international toll call on a land line when you can call for free with Skype so that cuts down on the phone networks profits I'm sure but there is still a strong demand for land line service.

Originally we had a phone network that started to get used more and more for internet traffic. Now we have a broadband network that is starting to take over the task of carrying phone calls.

I believe most Telcos now are planning to deliver phone services over broadband and cellular exclusively in the near future, our ancient NEAX telephone exchanges may actually have an end date in sight. It'll still take years, maybe even more than a decade, but the phone network is on its way out.

1424246 2016-08-09 00:36:00 Yup I would get naked BB if I were living alone.

The flatmates family live round this area - Taupo / Turangi. Mine dont. But most of my family are on FB. I could reach them there. The flatmates not on FB.

So thats probably the only reason I still have the phone

1424247 2016-08-09 20:46:00 Well I've got it and it's no better than ADSL, plus you could be without a phone for a week while they sort things out.

+1
I haven't bothered, don't have a problem with the current plan

1424248 2016-08-09 23:16:00 They're digging up our street and laying cables now. Friends round the corner got a pathetic 15Mbps, so no better than ADSL2. Another was on the 30 plan, so don't really think all the drama is worth it for basically doubling their speed.

What the story with medical alarms? I sense a headache coming if we sign up.

1424249 2016-08-10 00:09:00 I was going to change the title of this thread to "Do you still use a phone?"

It was supposed to be about UFB uptake.

I must agree with a couple of posters above that it is not much better than ADSL. I have it, and its not that much faster, and browsing seems to be about the same speed. But it is much faster if you upload a file. (or mine is at least)

I suppose it should be better if you have several users in the house.

What annoys me is that Chorus under quoted to get the vast majority of the work, and then realised that they needed to charge more!

1424250 2016-08-10 10:13:00 We are less than 10 minutes from downtown Auckland, and a 10 minute stroll from the local exchange, but we are stuck with plain vanilla ADSL, no prospects of ADSL2, and fibre is but an idle dream.

We called Chorus recently to reconfigure our phone lines (we have two, private and business) had a promising discussion, and the Chorus bloke said he'd call back, but we are still waiting.
