1424064 2016-08-07 01:19:00 I've got a vintage JVC stereo that I'd like to get serviced, can anyone recommend someone in Ak or Whangarei? Think some of the solder joints are getting dry. Cheers. Whenu (9358)
1424065 2016-08-08 03:15:00 I doubt there's anything on our tapes. 50 years is too long for the magnetic particles to remain oriented.

Not necessarily, they can last 50 years or more if they've been kept away from any magnetic effects, particularly alternating EM fields, though there may be some print-through audio in the background on very old tapes.

I have a lot of tapes dating back to the 1950's and they are all in the 55 to 60 years bracket.

However, they may not stand up to repeated playing and it is better to play them just once, recording to another medium, disk or digital, but I'll bet the copies wont be playable in another 50 years!

Cheers

1424066 2016-08-09 00:15:00 some 1940's wire recordings are still playable . They used to use wire before tape .
Didnt they also use steel band , in a separate room as breakages were so dangerous ?

That's encouraging Billy. I might keep some tapes and ditch the recorder

The recorder has just one motor and a long steel belt that goes round various moveable pulleys to do FFW, RWD, etc. The belt is in good condition but the pulleys have friction lining which is in poor condition. There are also 3 sets of friction material on each spool and they're all in bad shape too

Together with the fact that I couldn't get any sound out of it when I last tried about 20 years ago (although it did run) I think the recorder is headed for the tip (Valves ECC83, EL84 - plus EZ80 in the power supply)

Among the tapes I found one labelled Granny, who died in 1959, and one labelled Michael Letter Home 1967, which is me at the age of 20. I had an identical tape recorder at university and must have sent home a "letter" on tape although I have no recollection of it. These tapes are 3" and in reasonable condition. If anyone wants to transcribe these 2 tapes I wouldn't say no :)

The others are 5" (all tapes recorded at 3-and-3 quarter inches per second) and in mainly poor condition. Also their contents don't look interesting. Mainly "pop", as I referred to above, also Patrick OHagan, an Irish tenor that my father liked, and Rugby esp commentator Winston McCarthy. As children we frequently heard replays of fullback Don Clark kicking a famous goal somewhere, about 1959. "Wait for it... wait for it... it's... a... GOAL!"
