1423798 2016-07-29 00:56:00 I am going to have to do something reliable for the nexy year or two. PJ

"The screen I typed on WAS Microsoft word (MS Office 2003)"
Theres nothing wrong with MS word2003. It will save a .doc by default. Unless the defaults have changed
its not saving as .docx is it ?
Upgrading Office wont solve the issue .

If the other person cant open a .doc, then the issue is at there end.
If they cant open a .doc then its a very sad state of affairs :)
Open source programs wont help if the issue is with the persons PC you sent it to.

- assuming the person you are sending to cant open .doc .....
I would just type up in notepad , and save as .txt . It wont look pretty, but will open & be readable

Type up a small word doc, attach it in this forum, we'll see if there is really any issue with these doc's.

1423799 2016-07-29 01:04:00 Wordpad is free.
Libreoffice is free.
Openoffice is free.
Use one.
Save your money for other things, Microsoft don't really need it ;)

1423801 2016-07-29 05:21:00 Abiword ( Similar to MS Word. There is also MS Office Online. (https://www.office.com/" target="_blank">www.abiword.org/) was one I use to use. Similar to MS Word. There is also MS Office Online. (https:) Both don't have the advanced features, i.e. Macro's, Auto Correct, Hot Keys, Field Codes, Mail Merge. The latter you can save/share/collaborate online via MS One Drive (onedrive.live.com) account, but of course need internet connection. kahawai chaser (3545)
