1423420 2016-07-20 05:57:00 Diesel in an older petrol car even with fuel injection will not do any harm, a full tank of gas and you would never have known. Could dirty up some sensors but they should clean themselves. If they dont take them out and clean them. Other way around petrol in a diesel is a holocaust. prefect (6291)
1423421 2016-07-20 06:17:00 Young bubbly girl at local garage put diesel in my Delica L300 around 2004. Cost her 60 dollars for mechanic to drain/flush out. Still bit derivable but hopped along about a 1 km to Otahuhu workshop. in fact made me buy a diesel Custom Hiace shortly after that.. kahawai chaser (3545)

depends a lot on the amount put in.
diesel is oil and burning it fouls up the spark plugs. a petrol engine will tolerate a small amount but your unlikely to put such a small amount of fuel in at one time.

petrol in a diesel isn't as fatal as it used to be. small amounts are fatal over the long term as it increases injection system wear. however large amounts generally cause the injection pump to fail to build enough pressure and the ecu shuts the engine down, which is what saves it. this of course is with common rail, older injection systems would still continue to run and fatally damaging the injection system.

btw if you ever drain out contaminated fuel, don't keep any of it.
boss put diesel in the petrol forklift. we drained the fuel, cleaned the plugs and got it going.
we grabbed the bike, refueled it and went off to do some work. then the bike conks out.
mmmmmm.........fuel smells like diesel.
yep, the boss had kept some of the mixed fuel in a fuel can, which we unknowingly used to fill the bike with. argghhh.

1423423 2016-07-20 21:09:00 Well he had some petrol in it, then filled it. So about 30 - 35 litres.
It's OK, but it's now just like the ute, you start it, it splutters and farts and emits gigantic clouds of smoke.

Settles once it's going but still has residue I guess.

I suspect it will take till it needs filling again and perhaps another set of plugs, or a clean of them or something.

1423424 2016-07-21 02:43:00 It should come right, just take it for a good drive.

Then open the car door & kick him out. PJ

just keep topping it up with petrol. it will take a while to get the residue down.
