1426372 2016-09-23 00:03:00 The latest update occurred on my laptop last night and took a couple of hours to install and configure. When it restarted for the last time during the updating process, it gave a message saying that Classic Shell had been removed as it was not compatible with the latest W10 updates. B*******Ds. Anyone know if there is a workaround for this or an alternative (free)? Nothing comes up with a google search except for older issues of W10 and CS. user (1404)
1426373 2016-09-23 00:10:00 Just re-install it.
Works fine for me.

1426374 2016-09-23 00:14:00 The makers of the programs need to keep up with changes if its incompatible. It happens because a upgrade is installing a whole New OS. If you go into the C drive you'll find a windows.old folder, which deletes automatically after 30 days I think it is. Its there to roll back to the previous version should you want. wainuitech (129)
1426375 2016-09-23 00:20:00 A post on their FB page says this

If Classic Shell was removed by Windows 10, fear not. It can be reinstalled if you follow these steps (winaero.com)

1) You have to download the separate Classic Shell Utility (www.mediafire.com) to remove the broken installation left behind by Windows 10

2) Download the latest installer of Classic Shell and reinstall it.

1426376 2016-09-23 03:27:00 Thanks Speedy, I don't do FB so couldn't find that info.
Driftwood, note the info on the FB link says it won't reinstall as you suggest. You have to remove previous traces left behind. The upgrade of W10 removes the exe file but leaves all the other files in place.

1426379 2016-09-23 07:14:00 Tried to reinstall without removing traces of previous installation. W10 prevented me doing so. Followed instructions from the link from Speedy and was successful. user (1404)
1426380 2016-09-23 09:27:00 Just as an appendage to this post I’m curious as to how many of us use “Classic Shell”?

I know I do and I’m already Filthy with Microsoft, so if they stuff it with some unasked for upgrade it sure as hell isn’t going to improve matters.

When I read the lead post I thought, "Turn off updates", but I couldn’t find how and Google tells me you can’t. Well you can do some editing of the Registry but Microsoft have a key to the back door and turn them on again. Soooo, Game On!

Then it came to my attention whilst dealing with this that I now have a Zillion Apps that I didn’t install, and don’t want, and they can’t be deleted without a lot of trouble.

When I upgraded from Win 8.1 to Win 10 I followed Wainui’s instructions posted in an earlier thread and dutifully downloaded and extracted the .iso and with the help of “Rufus” installed from a flash drive.

In accordance with Wainui’s instructions I was very careful as to what I installed and opted out of a lot of childish crap.

Well the installation went perfect and I was very pleased with the outcome. To my disbelief Classic Shell was still there and working perfectly. The computer booted and shut down the quickest ever and I was suitably impressed.

However, since then it seems that Microsoft feels I really do need there “Store” and all the crap within and I need an Xbox and god I could go on if I bothered to look it all up.

Then to top thing off, in amongst my research comes the matter of Telemetry and Microsoft having YOUR computer ring home to tell them what you are doing and allow them to interfere with your computer. Well, one guy supplied a page of script to enter into your firewall to block Microsoft, but at the end pointed out that Microsoft will wake up to this and change their servers identity.

Technically how all this works I have no idea but I do know that sure as hell the dicks at Microsoft never read the book “How To Win Friends and Influence People”.
