1424231 2016-08-08 06:39:00 I see the government is raving on about the number of UFB connections. (24%)

That is good, but I just wish they had not given the lion's share to Chorus.

Luckily I'm in an area that has a different contractor. (But I can never remember their name)

The government say that it is delivering economic and social benefits to the nation, as well as allowing faster downloads.

1424232 2016-08-08 07:28:00 Unluckily they haven't given it to anyone in this neighbourhood and it seems have no plans to either. gary67 (56)
1424233 2016-08-08 08:20:00 Well I've got it and it's no better than ADSL, plus you could be without a phone for a week while they sort things out.

With family and friends also it's been an epic fail, so it's just as well it was free.

And I'm still not happy with no landline in the case of a power failure. :annoyed:

1424234 2016-08-08 09:14:00 Yeah, for me I just can't see the need for fibre.

The only time I want a large volume of data is if there's a good TV series to download, and I've got sod-all interest in 99% of what is out there.

So when I do discover something good (like Arrested Development) I'm already 3 seasons behind, so there's really no desperate urgency to stream or torrent the entire lot straight away - it can wait, or be spread over a few months. I just can't get excited about seeing every new release within hours of its release - that's just a juvenile waste of time and energy.

Most months I'm at a total loss as to how I could possibly consume my data cap.
I'd be happy to downgrade to a cheaper plan with 20GB or less data... if it was made available.

On rare occasions maybe a Steam download would bring me near to my cap.

I'd ditch my home phone too if it wasn't for the geriatric in the house who has zero ability with alternatives... she needs a phone that is nothing more than a phone. No added functions, no extra buttons.

1424235 2016-08-08 10:38:00 If the lack of a landline during a power cut worries you get a small ups and run the router off it. dugimodo (138)
1424236 2016-08-08 11:14:00 Or get a phone that has power back up. I use one here in case the power goes down. When the power dies you leave it on the handset tho... You can still use it Speedy Gonzales (78)
1424237 2016-08-08 11:50:00 You still need the ups because the phone uses VOIP over the router. Not much use having power to the phone if there's no line. dugimodo (138)
1424238 2016-08-08 11:57:00 Do you mean if the modem power is dead? I suppose that depends if you use the VOIP connection on the modem, or the phonejack Speedy Gonzales (78)
1424239 2016-08-08 20:35:00 If you still use a copper phone line then all you need is a regular old corded phone because the telephone exchange feeds power to them.
But when you go fibre they usually disconnect the copper line and feed the phone over the fibre using VOIP instead and then wire it out to your phone jacks. It works as if it's a regular phone line but it's not and won't work without the ONT having power, which is what I was meaning by router - the ONT is a specialised router. What I should have said is feed the ONT off a UPS. In my case I have a 12V battery I can hook an inverter to in an extended power outage but I'll just rely on my mobile phone anyway.

1424240 2016-08-08 22:13:00 Soon find out if we have a power cut here. But it did work with DSL.

Well good thing I told Vodafone that I was no longer using the phone line/jack. Because they were still charging me for the wiring maintenance.

Which only applies to copper not fibre
