1424068 2016-08-05 02:46:00 Just wondering why there seems to be such an 'anti smart meter' thing going on.

What's everyone's thoughts on them? They seem like a positive thing to me...

1424070 2016-08-05 03:12:00 I sort of did briefly, but unfortunately it's hard to tell what is real info, and what is hyped up drivel from the tin foil hat brigade. Surely it's no worse than a cellphone or wireless AP, and wouldn't it only be going for a few short bursts a day? Or am I misunderstanding how they work... wratterus (105)
1424071 2016-08-05 04:26:00 Wasn't aware of it until this thread, just did some reading and it seems like paranoia to me. With all the things I've seen linked to cancer by someone over the last few decades we should be seeing a global cancer epidemic of epic proportions.

Here's a thought, fluorescent lighting emits more radiation at normal distances than cell towers or smart meters and every school and commercial building I've seen has been using them for decades. Why don't we all have cancer already?

Life is carcinogenic, deal with it.

1424072 2016-08-05 04:51:00 I always thought it was people said their power bills went up after being changed to them. Which is possible, you ca't fiddle the new ones without it being noticed realtime. pctek (84)

Tut tut...as if!! As a lot of the older type of meters aged they invariably tended to be slower and showed less usage. A new meter installed is probably more accurate but less kind to the bill payer. Oh for an old meter. :devil
People hate paying power bills, telephone/IT bills, insurance bills, supermarket bills, any kind of bills, really. They all tend to cause things such as ulcers, heart attacks and the like.

Nothing to worry about! They only transmit when interrogated by the network system, or you initiate a call, and the cellsite replies with a brief exchange of data.

If you carry your phone around it transmits at regular intervals to maintain contact with the nearest cellsite, and if travelling in a vehicle (car, bus. train, or plane) it is transmitting at far more frequent intervals. That's why your battery lasts longer when your phone is sitting on your kitchen table than it does when you are out and about, and it goes flat even faster as the time between handovers from cellsite to cellsite gets shorter, because your phone calls up the cellsite at full power to ensure capture, then backs down to the appropriate level.

Fears create far more harm than a few random bursts of data, and you'd have to have your head inside the meterbox to get 'radiation' at the equivalent level as is radiated by a cellphone. I have a client who has convinced himself that he is being irradiated and that there is a conspiracy of some sort focussing on him. He is highly educated, but nothing I can say or do can relieve his fears for more than a few months, then he is back again..

That said, it is a good idea to limit the frequency and length of cellphone calls, they are not entirely benign and you wouldn't want to be the unlucky one who gets a brain tumour.

Cheers
