The screen on my Compac laptop has died. It works fine with another monitor plugged into it. I have just noticed that if I shine a bright light onto the laptop screen I can just see the image on the screen. Any idea if this is repairable? Its about 4 years old. |

depends on what died, the inverter for the backlight or the backlight fluoro. both failing in any case would cause the dead screen syndrome |

Is there an easy way to tell which of those faults may have happenned? |

not really but the tubes generally last a while until it reaches its half-life (half brightness) so its most likely the inverter |
