| 668450 | 2008-05-12 04:19:00 | I have a PC and a laptop. The PC uses Windows XP and is hard wired to the internet. The laptop accesses the internet wirelessly through a D-Link router. The laptop can share certain files that I have identified that are on the PC but only when I switch off the firewall. The firewall is the free version of Kerio Personal Firewall. The firewall in Network Security has a tab for "Trusted areas". One tick is for the laptop Address 10.1.1.1 - 10.1.1.20 Local Area Connection I guess that is what tells the firewall that the laptop can use the router. I have been reading quite a few items/forums on the web to try to understand what to do. It seems that some firewalls have a setting "trust local network", however Kerio does not seem to have this. It seems that I might have to tell Kerio what ports to allow use of in regard to this file sharing. Wish I was with Comodo but am scared to change :horrified because I will have to start again setting everything up. Need to configure what I have got. Can anyone tell me how to tell Kerio to allow the laptop to share the files identified (without me having to close it down each time) ?? Thanks in anticipation :D Misty |

| 668451 | 2008-05-12 04:41:00 | First if you want to find out the address of the laptop, on the laptop - click start / run type in CMD in the command prompt box type in ipconfig - this will tell you the address of the laptop. The router can issue a address anywhere from 10.1.1.2 - 10.1.1.255. ( 10.1.1.1 is the router itself) SO go into the firewall, and change the last address to 10.1.1.255. It will then read 10.1.1.1 - 10.1.1.225 , this will allow the full range of possible address's from the router through. |

Hi wainuitech That would seem clearly to work, even makes sense to my limited abilities. However I have changed the last address to 10.1.1.255 but it has not worked unfortunately. I have checked the address of my laptop and it shows as 255.0.0.0 -- So it seems clearly to be the last call, but within the range that you mention. Have even done a reboot of both machines......did not really think it would make a difference, but got to try anything. Weird ! Misty    |

| 668453 | 2008-05-12 09:45:00 | 255.0.0.0 is the subnet mask, not the Actual IP Address, when you type in ipconfig <Enter> You should get. IP Address 10.1.1.??? <<<(Random Number from router, between 2 -255) Subnet mask 255.0.0.0 Default Gateway 10.1.1.1 Lets see if anything is obvious -----> Go to the PC and do the same ipconfig, see what you get back in the way of Above details, The subnet mask and default gateway should (must) be the same on both the laptop & PC. The random IP address, the last set of numbers in the IP address ( top one) should be different, as each PC on a network HAS to have its own identifying IP address, you can not have two the same. This is what you should be getting, NOTE::: MY IP Address from the router I have uses a different set of numbers for the IP and Subnet, YOURS will be 10.1.1.1 for the gateway, subnet 255.0.0.0 Example only (www.imagef1.net.nz) Note: if I cant look and advice later tonight maybe some one else can - got a LATE night urgent job to complete. |

Hi wainuitech Have had a heavy headcold and was not up to trying anything too mind strenuous until it lifted a bit . Anyway have just done what you recommended . All looks fine (unfortunately) because PC is 10 . 1 . 1 . 3 and the laptop 10 . 1 . 1 . 2 Subnet masks are the same at 255 . 0 . 0 . 0 and default gateways are same at 10 . 1 . 1 . 1 I did try a little experiment and gave permission for one file on the laptop to be accessed from the PC and that worked fine - no problems ! Unfortunately our need is the other way round - we want to access stuff from the PC on the laptop . As I said, we can do this when Kerio is disabled but not when Kerio is working . Many thanks for your suggestions so far . Any others from you or other members most welcome . Misty  |

| 668455 | 2008-05-16 00:12:00 | Hmmmm - OK I'll load kerio onto a workshop PC and see what the settings are - Someone else may also reply . The files that you want to access are shared on the PC I assume ? |

| 668456 | 2008-05-16 02:09:00 | Well I got good news and Bad News---- The good: I managed to replicate the problem exactly  The BAD: What a heap of crap firewall as for easy usage, doesn't allow for the settings to be changed easily, or even allow on the network . I looked through every single setting there was on the firewall, and going by their settings it "should" be working - as a last resort I even downloaded the manual (if all else fails) :xmouth: Even following the "recommended settings" the network was unaccessible . I might be able to get it going, but personally its not user friendly, and way to hard to configure for the average user . It does have a lot of good features once it gets going . Personally If I were you I'd remove Kerio, and put on Comodo ( . personalfirewall . comodo . com/download_firewall . html" target="_blank">www . personalfirewall . comodo . com) - far more easier to understand and configure . The Blerb on Kerio site is " it just works" - I looked and lots of people are having similar problems with it . |

| 668458 | 2008-05-16 03:47:00 | No Worries misty - its no trouble, just a bit annoying that the program has gone so damn technical . I remember a old saying from Scotty from the Star Trek Movies ( yes I watch the trekies) --- At the time he disabled one of the star ships and he said something along the lines of " The more complicated they make things, the easier it is to stuff up the plumbing" and that is OH so true . I used to use kerio on a few PC's a long time back, and it worked perfectly . |
