385500 2005-09-08 10:43:00 I think it should be anthropomorphism,.

Just a pendaticastical point.

385501 2005-09-09 02:54:00 I think you'll find that anthropomorphism refers to assigning human ("anthro") attributes to other animals, not to inaminate nature, or even to a deity representing (or controlling) nature in various superstitions.

When you blame the "fickle finger of fate" , that's not anthropomorphism. It's probably not even "psychism"; since "fate" would probably be a minor deity, (or one of a group of deities, with Atropos wielding the scissors, rather than using her fingers).

385502 2005-09-09 03:22:00 In my Concise Oxford it says "anthropomorphism........the attribution of human form or personality to a god, animal or thing".

Katrina was a thing. (sad one too, my sympathy to all those people).

385503 2005-09-09 03:45:00 You cheated and looked it up. :D

The Big Oxford agrees. My "intuitive" meaning seems to be the one used in pschology and biology. (e.g. Penguin dictionary of psychology: "assigning human attributes to lower organisms or inanimate objects".)

New Zealand is one of the places where anthropomorphs abound. J. Rendel, 1913.

385505 2005-09-09 04:11:00 One half of me tends to agree with Ciceros article that more people who were physically able should've got off their bums and helped themselves more and got out in the aftermath of Katrina instead of waiting for "welfare state" help.

After all, recall during the war, the newsreels of streams of refugees pushing carts and prams fleeing from ruined homes and the advancing Germans. They had no one to help them, no fleets of buses to carry them away.

The other half of me says a lot of the problem was/is the New Right administration not caring about the poor, and not having much sense of social responsibility.

385506 2005-09-09 04:24:00 Yes I kind of think so too. Sitting around with friends talking about it we all agreed there seemed a conspicous lack of Dunkirk Spirit. Says something about US culture. When the systems fail the people fall apart. And the first response is military.

Thats the impression I've got through TV and the net anyway. I've no doubt there have been many cases of goodwill, like people working flat out in hospitals and the police and fire servce but the overall impression is one of disorder, violence and bad toilet habits. For a start dig a hole in the ground of that stadium and organise a long drop. Can't have people crapping all over the place yet there didn't even seem to be the will or orgainsation to do that.

385507 2005-09-09 06:11:00 Um well in my scan of this thread, yes i find it sad for these people, But the self help thing is very much a Kiwi thing . American society as i know is a throw away society . Fast food and fast lives, why cook when you can get from the takeaway better faster food, who knows how to cook something?

How many of you guys can cook a meal? if you do not have the supplies, to eat to cook with what do you do?

If someone is not taught how to help themselves, where does this instinct or knowledge come from? we really on a tv, computer society, how many people could cope with this reality? we have no idea what it is like, how they are, surviving or not as the case may be .

Help one another is more like let me live by means of killing others?

America is a online, drive thro / drive by place . who i think has become the help no one for fear of terrorism or attack from fellow country men . you can order fast food, petrol stations and what else with out leaving your car? insulated from society .

I have not watched much on this, or seen much on the net about this, but to my mind its if it doesnt effect me, then its not my problem type of society out there .
And these camps sort of remind me of the war camps, Auswitch? (sp?) and the rest, detention of the mind, body and soul, hopefully torture is not on the menu .

Just my thoughts on this .

I could be off, but i see that nature is slowly causing great human loss, and it is no longer in the poor coloured country's . Africa, Malaysia, Thailand, Peru? come to mind as to those who suffered from natures fury . ( i could be wrong on countries here - going by memory)

No offense intended . :dogeye:

385508 2005-09-10 04:34:00 I have a friend in N . O . , a steward for an airline who also got stuck in the ranks of the evacuees in the dome who told me about some of the outrageous things the "people" (using that term carefully here) who complained the loudest and longest about "the government just don't give a damn about us" .

He said that there were areas set up for sanitation in the dome, and the people just threw their used disposable diapers and feminine hygene items on the floor around them . Not wanting to wait for portable outhouses to be brought in, many just . . . er . . . defecated right next to their assigned cots instead of walking to the line and waiting for a turn in the open toilets . So it was outside the food areas too . The piles of human feces and urine were everywhere, even in the food lines and on the tables that held the free food .

The bathrooms, although heavily used, were not the only places people made "deposits" or marked their territory . The people (not all of them for sure) just didn't not care to exercise any shred of decency at all to their neighbors or the whole encampment either . Attempts to get the wastes placed at least in one area were met with threats and physical violence from wandering gangs who took over the floor of the dome .

All night long there were others shooting guns into the crowd for fun . Rapes by gangs of young men were going on all night too . They were taking girls as young as 6 and gang-raping them . There were also many older women over 60 who faced the same situation . There was no respect for life by the very people who were being photographed by the press and television stations for the world to see their "plight" while they preyed upon their own co-survivors in the darkened bowl .

There's more than meets the eye here . :stare:
