Ok. Its a quiet Friday night so why not?! George Bush started with Afghanistan.

There is no provable link between Saddam and Al Queda. And no link at all between Saddam and 9/11. But politics makes strange bedfellows. Saddam had little time for fundamentalist Islamics - they posed a threat to his secular state.

But my enemies enemy is my friend. So Al Queda became attractive to Saddam and there were intelligence reports that he lent them succor and support post 9/11. The accuracy of those reports is now mired in controversy.

But it makes sense. And made a whole lot of sense in Washington in 2002. Can we seriously complain that a middle-eastern despot was removed? And that Iraquis are getting a chance at democracy? Is that so terrible?

386249 2005-09-09 11:28:00 why did he start with Iraq? And why not anywhere else? This is indicative of the double-standards and oil / greed argument I presented earlier . Does anyone care to argue against that?

In the past few years the USA has been militarily active in Panama, Haiti, Lebanon, Kenya, Somalia, Serbia, Croatia and Kosovo . And other troubled spots around the world . Often it has been as the thankless mainstay of UN peacekeeping forces . Regardless, American soldiers die far from home . Whether Uncle Sam likes it or not, he has become the worlds policeman .

Now you will notice that these are all significant oil exporting nations . Somalia Crude is particularly favoured on the New York bourse . And Serbian Light has an enthusiastic following in Texas .

In Europe, the Balkan fiasco carried on from 1990 for 6 years of massacres and destruction of centuries old villages and towns . The French, English, Spanish, Italians et al wrung their hands but couldn't solve a problem in their own back yard . Finally the US got fed up and intervened - and the conflict ended .

The United Nations would collapse if the US withdrew .

So while the war in Iraq may be misguided, basically I believe Americans are good and their motives are good . For goodness sake - a guy like Michael Moore wouldn't be allowed to live in China, North Korea, Iran, etc . At least in the US he is able to freely say his piece . Let us keep a sense of perspective .
