385672 2005-09-05 06:54:00 Well I went and topped up my tank this afternoon - empty warning light was getting annoying. :p

Well, I should say I would of liked to topped up my tank, but the $50 didn't go that far

Must say though, I was the only one getting petrol at the station at what would of normally been a busy time ...

IF your vehicle has fuel injection, I suggest that you NEVER let the fuel get below the 1/4 tank level . :annoyed:

Let me explain:

The electric fuel pump in your tank (pending it IS fuel-injected) needs to be cooled and lubricated by the gasoline/petrol in the tank . Once the level gets too low (under 1/4 tank) then the pump starts to get hot from lack of cooling by not being in a gasoline/petrol bath, and the lubrication also starts top suffer .

The effects may not show up right away, but the bearings in the pump will cause drag on the armature of the motor and draw a little more amps afterwards and from then on .

OK . . . . not too bad as it is still running . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . but the system is then running at a higher amps draw than it's designed to run, and you take a lot of the life out of the pump, relays, wiring and if applicable, the quad-driver in the ECM . You can get away with this a few times . . . but habitually if you do so . . . well we have a saying in the auto repair business: "You can listen to me now, or you can pay me later!"

If you haven't bought an in-tank fuel pump . . . . . you will have to sell your first-born male child to pay for it .

As often the case, you don't intend to let it get that low . Driving home from work you decide that you just want to get home, and that you will fill up the next morning instead . Come morning, and you forget to leave for work a little earlier to allow for the stop at the petrol station, so decide to top up on the way home instead . And so on . . .
