385768 2005-09-04 04:26:00 RedHat is commercial and provide support. Mandriva are commercial and provide service. Etc... To paying customers.

If you get a free download, I wouldn't expect much support. ;) Commercial Linux companies make their money by selling support.Yes, but this is a free download offer of their commercial version, it isn't the free evaluation version. When you go through the purchase steps you put in a voucher code which deducts the full purchase price. Along with that you get membership registration. This gives you access to online help. They can still get some money out of you by buying software from the CNR store or getting additional services. :)

385770 2005-09-04 07:38:00 Help Jen (or anyone else smart!) . I downloaded the iso and burnt it to CD, but the Linspire prog won't run . . . can see the file and windows asks "what program do you want to use to open?" (I'm using XPpro SP1) .

I also tried burning the iso as a bootable disc with Nero . Rebooted up to the 'Caldera DOS' screen then got stuck at what to do from A:> prompt

ah well, guess it was a nice waste of an afternoon and back to windoze :(

385771 2005-09-04 08:21:00 Don't select "Burn bootable CD". Rather, go "Copy and Backup" and select "Burn image to disk" Edward (31)
385772 2005-09-04 08:49:00 Thanks Edward, I'll try that... maybe 3rd time lucky! Shortcircuit (1666)
385773 2005-09-04 19:22:00 Edward's suggestion worked, although I still couldn't autorun the CD from windows but I could reboot and load Linspire from there.

It does support my Logitech MX1000 mouse, so possibly will also support my Logitech Di Novo keyboard that I can't use in Windows. Did not appear to find my usb adsl modem (might have to figure out how to hook it up as a network device).

Running the live CD I also got two copies of KDE load after 2 error messages that kde*** couldn't be found on CD.

Nice and simple to get around the desktop etc.... not sure I like the task bar and icons down there yet.

Big problem I had runing the live CD is that I can't eject the CD while Linspire is running and can only shut down/reboot from Linspire meaning the eternal cycle as it tries to load again on reboot. Had to go into bios and and change boot sequence from DVD player to HD so I could load Windows.

Looks like it doesn't come with a partition prog if you want to load it to hard drive (but I may be wrong), will have to ferret round more.

Possibly not a bad start for a 1st time go with Linux :nerd:

385774 2005-09-04 19:42:00 Edward's suggestion worked, although I still couldn't autorun the CD from windows but I could reboot and load Linspire from there. You can only load the OS from boot, and not when Windows is running. That is normal.

Running the live CD I also got two copies of KDE load after 2 error messages that kde*** couldn't be found on CD.Those two error messsage are the same I got, with the two copies of Konqueror (KDE is the desktop environment which gives you all the GUI's you see, Konqueror is the file manager like Explorer is in Windows). I also got the two "could not open:/dev/cdrom" something error message. Think that is just Linspire trying to autorun the CD it found when the desktop loaded, but as you are running the OS from that CD it got a tad confused.

Nice and simple to get around the desktop etc.... not sure I like the task bar and icons down there yet.Everything is customisable, have a fiddle around and rearrange the positions. Right click on the desktop and pick configure desktop for starters. Heaps more customisation found under Control Center. Right-clicking on the taskbar will give you more configuration options. Basically just explore everything. :)

Had to go into bios and and change boot sequence from DVD player to HD so I could load Windows. No you can't pull out the CD while you are still running Linspire, that is equivalent to pulling out the hard drive that Windows is installed on and expecting it to carry out running normally. :p. To get the CD out so that it doesn't boot back into Linspire, you just restart the PC and push on the CD eject button during POST. You can get the CD out before the BIOS reaches the boot device stage.

Looks like it doesn't come with a partition prog if you want to load it to hard drive (but I may be wrong), will have to ferret round more.I saw that it had QTParted listed on the menu, but I have no idea what partitioner they offer during an install. Have a look on the Linspire website under Support and Installation for guides on dual booting.

Glad you enjoyed your first taste of Linux. :)

385775 2005-09-04 20:17:00 Thanks Jen,

I ran out of time last night to play around after d/loading and making three different discs of the ISO.

At least now I know how to get the damn CD out, just call me thick but it's a normal learning curve for someone with a (relatively) low IQ... all fun though :)
