668557 2008-05-12 09:28:00 OK. Thanks, everyone. Can anybody direct me to the URL where I can download SP3 onto a computer other than the one it's intended for?

Cheers

The link is in the 2nd post

668559 2008-05-12 11:22:00 Here is a way you can shorten an all-night download on dial-up. Download a (free) prog called DialupMonitor - from (shakey) memory I think it comes from skynergy.com, otherwise do a search. If you happen to be using Win 98SE get v. 1.4.1.0, which is archived somewhere on the site; otherwise the current v. 1.4.2.0. This is a very handy prog for monitoring your time on the net generally, and provides a settable auto cutoff time for when you get distracted away from the cptr and forget to log off the net. I find it is also very handy for doing long downloads at night. Estimate how long your download will take (for SP3 at 66MB, about 4.5hrs), allow say 30 - 50% extra for good measure and slow servers, and set the DialupMon disconnection time for that. Be sure to disable the 'Disconnect if idle for x minutes' setting in IE Internet Options first. Dialupmon will disconnect at the set time. Robin S_ (86)
668560 2008-05-12 12:23:00 Take note if youre deciding to update to SP3

You may want to read this (www.infoworld.com)

As well as this (forums.microsoft.com) on the Microsoft forum.

As it says it affects AMD systems, and you may get affected if youre using the ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe motherboard or HP systems with this mobo in them

In the days that I was on dial up I use to work on 20mb an hour.

668564 2008-05-13 06:32:00 Thnaks to you all. I think I'll leave it for a while, given I have an AMD chip! Ans I will try to locate the DialUpMonitor mentioned by Robin S. Cheers A Team (13613)
668565 2008-05-13 09:06:00 [QUOTE=wainuitech;673211]I cant be 100% Sure, but I dont think so, What I have found is with customers PC's that I have here in the workshop, some of them have required "pre patching" with windows updates before SP3 (66mb) version comes available .

Going by that windows updates loads all the pre requisites then downloads SP3, it does download to the PC, extracts it before installing, but to get it you would have to go to someone's PC that has downloaded and locate the file, BUT personally I wouldn't try it .

If you want to wait - I'm sure at some stage a Kind hearted Magazine like PC World will put it on the Cover DVD (HINT HINT any PCWorld staff reading this)

Hi all:

Reply from Ted Gibbons, PC World to question as to whether PC World were thinking of putting SP3 on a cover DVD:

668566 2008-05-13 09:22:00 Is the magazine available on a one-off basis, that is not subscribing, but purchasing at the local book store? Ta A Team (13613)
