2008-05-12 13:16:00 | A long lament alas! :( I couldnt remove the Win login box at Startup with User Profile. I decided to use TUTs Troubleshooter Suspend function. That shut down but restarted with the login box. I used TUTs Suspend and Delete function. That shut down and restarted endlessly- but never got back to my desktop before it shutdown again. Thus I cannot use Restore etc. I tried to access Safe Mode Recovery Console, but that only brings a CHKDSK type list of about 2 pages before it hangs. I tried all the other options on the Safe Mode menu eg Last Known Config etc no use. I used the WinXP SP2 disc kindly supplied by PC World to try a repair/reinstall. That reinstall took me thru to the Product Key box but says my Product Key is invalid. I know it is Absolutely Correct! I cannot back out of the reinstall nor complete the reinstall. I can quit using F3 but that just puts me back in the shutdown/restart recycle back to the reinstalling screen. I have trolled thru all the MS Windows XP support articles and cannot find exactly this problem, nor similar which I can do. How can I uninstall the reinstall? How can I fix the recycling at Start up? Heeeeelp Pleeeeease!:waughh:

2008-05-12 22:02:00 | If you are part way through a reinstall you have to carry on. That reinstall took me thru to the Product Key box but says my Product Key is invalid. I know it is Absolutely Correct! Formatting the drive and starting again more than likely wont work. If the product key is not accepted on a repair install then it wont be accepted on a format / install. Depending on if you have XP Home or XP Pro will also depend on what key to use, XP Home CD must have a XP Home key, like wise with Pro, and Pro is a bit more fussy as to what keys it will accept. I had something similar thing happen on a customers HP Computer, the Certificate Of Authenticity was on the side of the case but the XP CD would not accept the product code, neither would two other XP CD's I had. The Solution was to phone Microsoft, tell them what had happened, the guy asked for the product key on the COA - he looked it up and said it was not a legal key, yet it clearly was as I was looking at the COA, or it was a damn good copy. He did manage to fix it though - if you have a close look at the COA there are other smaller numbers, usually starting with X??????? then there is the bar code number, MS asked for these numbers, I don't know what he did, but after 5 minutes on hold he came back asked for my email - a couple of minutes later a new Product key arrived and he waited while I entered it, and it worked perfectly. So ring MS, tell them whats happened regarding your key and have the COA handy as you will more than likely need those other numbers.

2008-05-13 01:03:00 | Thank you WT . I was afraid of that . Shld I ring MS NZ or US? Surely if it was a fraudulent Product Key it wouldnt have allowed activation of the programme originally? Could the cds be pirated or somesuch? Neither of them is scratched or corrupted visually . I also tried using the XP Home SP2 cd my husband has with his product key and that didnt work either, but I thought that might have bamboozled it?

2008-05-13 01:39:00 | One thing to try - get a XP Home and Pro disc (if you have both) and try copying it to the hard disk three times for each of XP Home or Pro (6 times if you have both). For the first copy, open ...\i386\setupp.ini and change the last 3 numbers on the PID or ProductKey line to XXXXX270 For the second, open ...\i386\setupp.ini make it XXXXXOEM For the third open ...\i386\setupp.ini make it XXXXX335 Try entering your product key by lauching the setup.exe file in each of the 3 or 6 folders and entering your product key. One copy SHOULD work - whichever one does, use nLite and burn to a CD and reinstall XP, formatting the HD. :)

2008-05-13 02:06:00 | That reinstall took me thru to the Product Key box but says my Product Key is invalid. I know it is Absolutely Correct! Look carefully. You can confuse 8 and B for instance. Thats usually the cause..........

2008-05-13 02:09:00 | And O and 0. If you have an XP Home disk, with an XP Home key, it will work, even if the key is pirated. You just won't be able to activate Windows. It doesn't stop you from installing it.

2008-05-13 03:34:00 | Thanks folks, ;) I had noted and tried the 8 and B versions but hadnt thought of 0 n O but now see I havent any of either. I will try jwils workaround, although Im unsure how I can reinstall when I can get out of the current one. Fingers crossed:dogeye:

2008-05-13 03:58:00 | What it all boils down to regrading the Keys is quite simple - if the product key is legit, and it can be proven - no worries, if its a legit key you will have the COA looks like one of these (www.microsoft.com)- if its not legit, and I don't know how many times I have heard " its real a mate gave it to me" - Yeah right  then there's a problem. | wainuitech (129) | |
