2008-05-12 06:53:00 | Hi, All. Windows Update is prompting me to download XP SP3 (65 Mb). (SP1 and 2 already installed) I am on Dial-Up (at home) so that creates a problem. I can try and download it at work. If that works, that's fine. Sometimes (work) security settings don't allow some downloads. The download appears to be sensitive to the location it's being downloaded to (ie searching to see what you've got, first). However; Where do I find SP3 on MS's site? Will I be able to install it at home, when downloaded at a location where XP isn't installed (ie work)? If I can't, what are my options (other than letting it download overnight on Dial-Up)? Cheers:help:

2008-05-12 06:59:00 | The smaller download of 66Mb only appears to come through on the windows updates. If you have a high speed connection you can download the larger 316 mb installer / Update from This Microsoft Page (www.microsoft.com) then burn to CD or Pen drive ( as long as its big enough), take it home to your PC (s) and install from that.

2008-05-12 07:10:00 | Thanks, wainuitech. Even better, even more Mb to download!! Supplementary Question; Given that I already have all previous updates already on board, is there a way I can download only what I need from SP3? That is, avoid downloading all the cumulative updates that I already have which appear to be part of SP3? Ta | A Team (13613) | |
2008-05-12 07:21:00 | I cant be 100% Sure, but I dont think so, What I have found is with customers PC's that I have here in the workshop, some of them have required "pre patching" with windows updates before SP3 (66mb) version comes available. Going by that windows updates loads all the pre requisites then downloads SP3, it does download to the PC, extracts it before installing, but to get it you would have to go to someone's PC that has downloaded and locate the file, BUT personally I wouldn't try it. If you want to wait - I'm sure at some stage a Kind hearted Magazine like PC World will put it on the Cover DVD (HINT HINT any PCWorld staff reading this):p

2008-05-12 07:26:00 | There is no urgency to install SP3. Turn off the warning and install it when you are ready. I personally will not be installing it for some time until everyone else has ironed out the problems with it. If it is like any other Service Patch in the past from Microsoft since MS was born it will sure as hell have errors that will require subsequent patches. Give it 6 months or so, then think about it.

2008-05-12 07:34:00 | I got SP2 on CD direct from MS, back then you could order a CD from them. I downloaded the 316md SP3 file and saved it onto my flash drive and installed it on 4 PC's here 2 desktops and 2 laptops and have installed it on a friends machine too and so far there have been no issues at all, everything works just sweet, unusual for MS to get it right. | gary67 (56) | |
2008-05-12 07:53:00 | I have installed SP3 on two of my pcs using MS Upadates. No problems at all. | CliveM (6007) | |

2008-05-12 09:16:00 | OK. Thanks, everyone. Can anybody direct me to the URL where I can download SP3 onto a computer other than the one it's intended for? Cheers
