This article comes from a person I know, and I vouch for her authenticity . Its an amazing read, not in the least because its had over 71000 visits in the last couple of days .

Seems Fema, who organized (if you can call it that) the evacuation of NO has set up camps, leased from ordinary places and are / will keep people there incomunicado .

There are forces behind the scenes here that are eyeopening .

387090 2005-09-09 04:52:00 Looks like a good set-up to me.

Food, shelter, beds and baths. Stay as long as you like (as long as its no longer then 5 months) and you get a food package and money to help you on your way when you do leave.

Obviously protocols are in place to keep unrest at a minimum, these people have been through a stressful time.Likewise various agencies have units stationed nearby in the event it does get out of hand, Im sure these will be deployed elsewhere as life settles down.

Overall, Top show, Whats the problem?

387091 2005-09-09 05:21:00 Let's see . . . the CHURCHES lease out the buildings to FEMA . . . and I bet for a few $$$'s too .

I understand about the not wanting any clothes and foodstuffs . . . the plea has been put out even in California . . they do not want clothes or food . . only money . There is still enough infrastructure in the surrounding states to procure the foods and clothing they need . There is also the problem of tainted foodstuffs too . . . remote . . but this sorta thing brings out the whackos in droves .

The same mentality that had people shooting at the rescue helicopters will also have someone poisoning the food supply or worse . Better to have the local authorities buy the goods in the open market .

There is also the racial issue to contend with here . There ARE people who don't like other people because of the color of their skin . Imagine that! Articles of clothing and supplies can be tainted in resourseful ways by a psycho .

The making people stay in the enclave MIGHT be for their own protection too . Some of the "local talent" might have their noses out of joint from so many people getting federal aid and living in their neighborhoods . Need I say that the remoteness of the camp might also be a protection .

I am just guessing here . . . but there is more here than meets the eye . . . and I don't like making hipshots at what is happening in the name of humanity . . . . there is always a reason for anything . Let this settle out for a while and then we can form opinions later if it does or doesn't work out good .

Sometimes we hear hoofbeats and jump to the conclusion that there are zebras coming . Most times, it's only horses .

387092 2005-09-09 05:57:00 American authorities doing a good job, I think not. Check this out:

387093 2005-09-09 08:15:00 Wow! zqwerty, that was an interesting read. Thanks ................m

...........and it clearly shows the difference between the official response and the response of individual people. The people's response is good, but the official response ( i.e. the government state and federal) lacks.

387094 2005-09-10 04:03:00 This www.socialistworker.org should be a direct link to Zqwerty's article. It is good - worth reading and it has a ring of truth. The article displays the sort of human cooperation we would expect and therefore is encouraging. Their experience of officials is startling and sombre. What a mess.

The only note of caution is that this is posted on Socialist Worker.com so there may be a political bias to the report. Nevertheless it seemed genuine to me.

As for Netchicken's link - just plain paranoia IMHO. Given the violence and anarchy among flood victims it is no suprise that the police etc are nervous and want to restrict the camp inhabitants. After all, its a free lunch for anyone who can con their way in.

Agree with you Winston - because they were not given free rein during their visit they have quickly turned every little thing into something sinister .

387096 2005-09-10 22:58:00 Granted it may be taken out of context, even I am open to that, however with over 157,297 page views and 270 replies in 3 days, it certinaly is hitting the net hard .

As a first person experience of the aftermath of Katrina and the organization around it, I think its a valuable insight into the structure and operation of the rescue effort .

If thats all you want to read into it then go right ahead . I admit I did have my doubts at the suitablitly of posting the link here owing to the difference in the interest groups . But I thought it couldn't hurt . Guess I was wrong .

My answer . . . please, post anything that you feel is germain to the situation .

There is a tremendous learning curve in action here, and we all should look - hear - and try to understand all the facets of what happened .

I personally feel a little lost because of the hatred some people in the US have for authority, and the general disdain for law and order . If something can be gleened from the things that happened, are happening and happen later, then the loss of life will (maybe) not have been useless .

Please keep the postings coming in as you find them . . I for one read them all .

And . . . . . please remember that just because I am an American citizen, I do not operate under the flag of "My country . . . right or wrong!"

Most times, the truth actually hurts a lot . . . keep it up .
