669134 2008-05-13 22:59:00 I recently upgraded my computer and wanted some info on my old one transfered. Instead, the retailer where I got the new one took the hard drive out of my old computer and made it into an external hard drive for me, however although I can connect the external to the computer and see all the files I am unable to access lots of them and don't know how to transfer photos or videos onto my new computer. Please can someone point me in the right direction for some clear instructions. I am older and not too familiar with the workings of the computer.
Thank you

669135 2008-05-13 23:05:00 Gidday and welcome to PressF1. :)

When you say "can't access", what do you mean by this? Do you get an error message when you try and open files/folders?

Did you have a password on your old PC? Possibly the files are protected, and you need to 'take ownership' of the folders you want to copy off before you can access them. (Common problem in this situation.)

Can get instructions for doing this, just want to make sure we're on the same page.

Also, it's possible you haven't got some of the same programs installed on the new PC that you did on the old one - hence being unable to open some files.

The chap who put your HDD in the enclosure - do you know if he tested the HDD first?

669136 2008-05-13 23:09:00 Hello Nana,

It maybe you are experiencing 'rights' issues with the files on the old external drive, they were created under a different account to the new computer that you are now using to try to access them.

Do you know what operating system your computer is using and when you say 'some' of the files, does that mean that you can access and open the rest?.

It could be the the old computer created those file (the 'some' you cant access) with an application (program like word or excel etc) and your new computer doesnt have that application (program) installed and therefore cannot open (access) them...

669137 2008-05-14 01:04:00 If the new PC runs vista and the old one used XP you may get problems like this Agent_24 (57)
669138 2008-05-14 22:30:00 Thanks to Wratterus, SolMiester and Agent 24. You have given me somthing to try and I still have the cd to load "word" that came with my old pc so I will reload that and the also the Kodak program I used with my photos. Hopefully that may help. My old Pc was Windows 98 2nd edition the new one has windows xp. I also used Opera on the old computer but so far haven't put it on the new one don't know if this would make any difference.
So I'll load word and hope for the best.
Thank you!!!
