388388 2005-09-14 06:36:00 Hi,

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to go about building something (pretty basic, using a 555 timer or something) that grounds one of two wires for 0.7 seconds, depending on which direction the key of the drivers side door is turned?

Basically a simple central locking controller minus relays etc - that stuff I already have, I just need the signal.

Can I do it just running one wire from the drivers side lock - the one that already connects to the motor there?

I'm replacing our dead alarm, which used a remote control, with a driver's door activated central locking thing. Don't care about the alarm.

Cheers

388389 2005-09-14 16:52:00 sounds like you need one of these...
www.surplustronics.co.nz
theyre pretty grunty for this kinda app,but you can do pretty much anything you like with em...
youre gonna need relays/fets/xsistors/whatever to drive the actuators...but that goes for 555's as well...
the lates pic chips are 4 pin,and very, very small, in an SOIC type package,if thats what you need...
pick a part do auto relays for about a buck,if i remember right...

388390 2005-09-14 22:37:00 I already have the controller for the actuators. Just need to sink a wire to ground to lock/unlock. Nothing over a few mA.

I suppose I COULD use a picaxe but I reckon it would be easier with just a timer and transistor. I might pop down to Dick Smith and see what I can come up with.

What would the best way to trigger it be? Assuming the person might hold their finger on the lock for MORE than 0.7 seconds, triggering a second cycle which could do something wierd to the locks (I'll check this)?

388391 2005-09-14 23:49:00 Update:

I don't need a controller at all! If I hold the wire to ground AFTER the doors are locked nothing happens, so I'll just wire the relay trigger wires directly to the door key. Thanks for your help.

388392 2005-09-15 03:07:00 You actually thought about it, and minimised it. Well done.

This reminds me of a user's circuit published in Silicon Chip a while ago. He used about three chips to make a remote switch for a light. I looked at it, and realised that all he needed was toggle switch and the same powerbrick and relay he already had, with no electronics at all. (And the electronics just toggled the relay on/off, with no indication of the relay state at the switch end.)

But if hasn't got a computer in it, it's not modern. And it won't need upgrades and patches every week. You shouild be using Windows Automotive, at least, preferably the 64 bit version.

I'd use a PicAxe 08M rather than a 555 these days ...(and it can play a tune too).

388393 2005-09-15 07:01:00 But when I buy my own car, I'll build the biggest, badest microcontroller-powered locking system the human brain can come up with..... ;) george12 (7)

heh...you wont wanna use a picaxe then...if you nest any more than 2 gosubs it commits harikari...LOL...im glad you found a simple solution...:)...funnily enough, what you want is a debounce circuit,of which a common solution is...(drum roll)...a 555!... :waughh: ...go figure...theres heaps of 555 based debounce circuits all over the net...go nuts...:)

388395 2005-09-15 12:59:00 It's gonna run off a laptop (linux of course), so I can unlock the car via bluetoothing a 10-digit code to it, and I will have a fingerprint scanner in place of the keyholes. Unlocking either of these ways will automatically shift it to neutral, unlock all doors and start the engine, warming it up for me, all before I even get up out of bed.

Then when the engine is started, it will run through a list of routines (as I begin to wake up) including squirting water on the windows and cleaning them, defrosting front and rear (if the temperature is appropriate), and warming the interior of the car.

It will text my cellphone via the internet to politely remind me to get up, and that the car is ready. When I get down there, most likely at about 8:30, it will be warmed up and ready for a speedy takeoff, because by that time I'll be most likely late for school.

388396 2005-09-15 23:10:00 Anyone know how to get the cover off a 1992 Toyota Corolla front door? george12 (7)
388397 2005-09-16 03:00:00 One step up from a PicAxe, a gas axe ;)

A Picaxe can debounce push buttons, too. And play a tune.
