387425 2005-09-11 01:37:00 Microsoft is planning to release a ridiculous amount of product edition for there next OS, Windows Vista.

These are; Windows Vista Starter Edition, Windows Vista Home Basic Edition, Windows Vista Home Premium Edition, Windows Vista Ultimate Edition, Windows Vista Small Business Edition, Windows Vista Professional Edition, and Windows Vista Enterprise Edition.

Then of course all will be avaliable in 32 and 64-bit (except Starter Edition) so that brings the total to 13 different versions of Windows Vista. Yay!

For a breakdown of what the versions mean go here. (www.windowsitpro.com)

387426 2005-09-11 01:49:00 Does anyone know or can they guess how many versions of XP there are?

I guess about the same head count as the new Vista. There may be even some that Vista may not include that are presently available..like Student/Teachers..any others?

387427 2005-09-11 01:56:00 I think that Student/Teachers edition is XP Home but with a different price, so its not really a different version and may still exist with Vista.

I think theres XP Pro, XP Home, XP Starter Edition, XP Tablet PC Edition, XP Media Center Edition, and XP Pro x64 (64-bit), which is only 6 versions.

Correct me if im wrong.

387428 2005-09-11 02:02:00 I'll do a little more research on it later, but there's always the XP-Server Edition too .

I think when the smoke clears, that they will probably be neck in neck for versions, without going the 32/64 bit stuff .

Going fishing . . . . . . .

387429 2005-09-11 04:05:00 There is no XP Server Edition. There's Windows 2003 Server, totally different product.

The Student/Teacher editions just come with different EULAs IIRC

387432 2005-09-12 03:43:00 The bug-free, totally secure version? It's been promised. Many times. :D Graham L (2)

387434 2005-09-12 10:13:00 Sorry I missed out Windows N, which will also be a Vista version (European Only), which could bring the total amount of Vista versions to 17 (2 versions of Windows Vista N are to be released - possibly in 32-bit and 64-bit versions).

I'm having a little laugh at imagining a computer illiterate staring at a wall with 17 different versions of Vista, and trying to work out what version he/she needs/wants.
