The OP, and several others, are looking for a place they can download NZ legislation for free.

I have already stated that there is no site where you can do that. Browsable raw current legislation is available free on the PAL site.

If you want hard copy or enhanced electronic legislation you have to pay for it. There 'aint no such thing as a free lunch.

388114 2005-09-19 02:57:00 And the reason why anyone other than a lawyer (who can charge out megadollars per hour) would subscribe to Brookers Online is?

Or is the myth still alive that only lawyers need to read statutes? Or the other one that only lawyers understand them, therefore legislation only needs to be made available to lawyers?

I think we can give Margaret Wilson the credit for new legislation which is more readable . There is a project to try and make statutes quasi-plain language .

And I expect that in time PDF statutes will be available, as well as a database of repealed legislation, all for free public use . So it should be .

388115 2005-09-20 03:28:00 The legislation is already in electronic form so that it can be printed or made available to the commercial exploiters. Noone is asking for printed copies for nothing. Dead trees cost money.

But it can be made available in electronic form for nothing. We have already paid for it. We pay the Crown Law Office to draft it, and the politicians to pass it. It belongs to us. No free lunch here. For Brookers, maybe.

What does a wired lawyer with no law books do when the power goes off? Or someone cuts the fibre optic cable leading to his town? Back to the hard copy of Penthouse? ;)
