387405 2005-09-17 09:14:00 Nice. We're only getting ours when missus goes to the US later this month.

OK. If something gets broke I suggest you think about an earlier thread from Beetle.

I bought my camera from Napier and had no problems.

Just a question about warranty.

Just a thought Greg - you may want to check out the prices at NZ retailers (if you haven't already) like Photo and Video in ChCh - as at 1 Sept 2005, their price was $799.88 for that model.

Excellent store in my experience (and other members of my family are loyal customers as well).

If you find the prices aren't too different from the US price, you might want to think about buying it in the country where you are going to live (if you/your wife are coming back that is!). Certainly better for after sales service.

If you choose to follow this up, do be careful about the deal - I bought my camera there only to find when I got it home that the battery charger and camera remote were not included. On investigation I found that the NZ Olympus importer is a cheapskate (or price gouger?), so the pack overseas included these items (I had researched it thoroughly OVERSEAS but didn't look to see what the package contained in EnZed - duh!). The local importer had a similar price in $NZ to the overseas deal, but had left out those expensive goodies, presumably to make a bigger profit. &*$#*%d. Caveat emptor and all that...

IMHO - John

387407 2005-09-17 09:47:00 Yeah thx John. We're only buying the camera itself from USA, and when missus gets back we'll get the accessories locally.

I got a local price of $750 from my regular dealer down the road, but can save over $100 by getting it over there.

Our camera is an Olympus C5050 (5 megapixels) Paul . We have had it for about 18months - 2 years . It was superceded not long after we bought it (I think by the C5060), but it is a great camera . It has an aperture range of F1 . 8 - F10, and I think that is still superior to the subsequent comparable Olympus models . The later models have a wider range of zoom though, and the C8080 is 8 megapixels .

Depends upon what you want/need - personally I have found the aperture range to be an important feature . I also like the fact that it has "normal' batteries (even though they create bulk and weight) so you can buy fresh replacements anywhere, and it uses both Compact Flash (cheap memory) and xD cards - both in the camera at the same time . Unfortunately the C5050 cannot take the new 1Gb xD cards, though it is not really hard work to carry two x 500Mb cards if necessary . Anyway, on a month's overseas trip last year I used my iPod to store photos until I got home .

It is hard to argue with that Greg! Well done.

387411 2005-09-17 12:58:00 It appears that quite a few markets did not get the C5050 charger or remote. The NZ importer may have picked up some originally intended for somewhere else.

Just make certain your quoted US price includes state sales tax, this is not normally quoted in adverts and can add up to 20% to price depending in which state you buy in.

387413 2005-09-19 11:30:00 Excellent point . US sellers are able to escape sales tax when selling out of state . But if you buy it in a shop you'll have to pay a kind of GST sales tax . This is a state tax, and additionally some cities have an additional sales tax on top .

American prices, unlike here, do not include sales tax in these prices . Here GST is included in most retail prices .
