669390 2008-05-14 06:23:00 About a week ago Windows Update dumped IE 7 on me, followed the next day by a couple of hot fixes for it.

There have been lots of problems since. Like I had a virus or some such; but Spybot S&D, AVG 7, AVG 8, AdAware, Trogen Remover and RogueRemover have found nothing. Hijack This shows nothing that shouldn't be on my system, so I think IE7 is the culprit.

So since I don't use it; can it safely be uninstalled? Will Windows Update still work if I do?

669391 2008-05-14 06:26:00 If it appears in add/remove programs, you should be able to uninstall it .

It SHOULD revert back to IE 6 .

WHAT was the name of the virus?? IE isnt the only way you get them you know

669392 2008-05-14 06:50:00 As I said in my post above, nothing was found: there was just the appearance of virus activity.

Spybots Teatimer and avg7 icons disappeared from the system tray; and Comodo Firewall had 3 of its 4 security features disabled.

The next day I found that MusicMatch Jukebox wouldn't run. I have tried several times to reinstall MMJB from the downloaded installer which I had saved. This fails every time with the message "An error occurred while launching the setup. The remote procedure call failed."

669393 2008-05-14 07:01:00 Well you shouldnt have AVG 7 and 8 installed anyway.

If you think you have something post a HJT log

669394 2008-05-14 09:02:00 lol. I didn't / don't have them both installed. I have upgraded in the meantime.

Like I said in the original post,_"Hijack This shows nothing that shouldn't be on my system." so if there is something, it is disguised. What do you think?

669395 2008-05-14 09:06:00 Well did you uninstall IE 7? Speedy Gonzales (78)
669396 2008-05-14 09:09:00 You can try this - it sometimes fixes silly little annoying problems -

Click on start / run, type in sfc /scannow Make sure you have your windows CD handy as it may ask for it - that command checks the windows file system for faults and replaces damaged / missing files

Out of interest, what makes you says theres nothing in the HJ log, do you know how to read them fully ?

I did run System File Checker . It fixed about 8 errors .

I wouldn't call myself an expert, but everything in the Hijack This report was identifiable as belonging in XP, or so I thought .

669399 2008-05-14 10:25:00 IE:yuck: is gone and MusicMatch is running again:)

Would you believe it? When uninstalling IE Igot the message that it might prevent FireFox from running, Ha!

Since IE7 was installed without my knowledge; I left the room for a few minutes. Can I prevent it from happening again? :thanks

IE6 did not replace IE7 so I can't go to windows update and change the settings.
