669142 2008-05-14 00:48:00 Hi everyone. I've finally got my new toy. What I want to do is set it up with essential stuff, then do a Restore Backup so that in future I can revert to the original best setup.

My main use is browsing the net, email, and work documents - have Office 2003. My children can try their games in future on the old laptop. :D

I intend to install AVG antivirus unless there are better choices. Also Firefox. What else do you recommend?

669144 2008-05-14 01:01:00 Avast antivirus, or Eset NOD32 if you wanna pay for one.

Firefox or Opera.

669147 2008-05-14 10:58:00 CygWin (www.cygwin.com/), PuTTY (http:).Just curious why you would recommend those two applications after Winston stated his needs? Jen (38)
669148 2008-05-14 12:11:00 Maybe a image backup and folder program like the free XML Drive Image (www.runtime.org) and free version of syncback (www.2brightsparks.com)... kahawai chaser (3545)
669149 2008-05-14 22:06:00 Just curious why you would recommend those two applications after Winston stated his needs?Because I suffered amnesia between reading his post and submitting mine . I started out thinking what he would need, then somehow got on the track of "which Windows applications would I consider indispensable". Erayd (23)
669150 2008-05-15 03:54:00 Very helpful thanks. I'm interested that Avast is preferred to AVG and I'll go with that. Winston001 (3612)
