2008-05-19 00:18:00 | Hi, I tried to search and google but I get so many different opinions that I don't want to use any of them. Anyway, I have a Dell 1520 notebook but it always seems to me that the start up is really bogged down with all the DELL bloatware i.e. QuickDellset, Dellguide, Bluetooth etc. I usually use CCleaner to remove start-up programmes etc but how much can I actually remove without compromising the system? Does anyone have a list of programmes I can delete at start-up for the Dell notebook range? Thanking you in advance!

2008-05-19 00:41:00 | I'm at work at the moment so I will hijack this this evening. fwiw the notebook has 4gb RAM. | silu (9854) | |
2008-05-19 01:00:00 | Sometimes things need defraging. I understand that the registry and the like can get fragmented, I have tried this: technet.microsoft.com before and it worked ok. Sysinternals produce all kinds of useful utils, they've been brought by microsoft though... technet.microsoft.com Also, try disabling everything (start-up items) and only enabling them when you know you are missing a feature. Microsoft have a program autoruns.exe which will help. Here is a link: technet.microsoft.com Anyway, the soution I think is to: - make sure things don't run unless they have to - defrag I have also noticed that a laptop that has software which doesn't change still slows down due to all the microsoft updates being applied. I'm not sure why this happens and suspect it shouldn't be so, but it is an observation. I also think that installing trial antivirus software, uninstalling and trying another is a bad idea. I have found that this also slows down a computer, and this software works so intimately with the internal workings, it never seems to fully de-install. Maybe a registry clean might help too? Although I have damaged computers before (required a re-install) by using registry cleaners. Try reinstalling Windows, that kind of freshening always speeds up a computer.

2008-05-19 02:23:00 | Anyway, I have a Dell 1520 notebook but it always seems to me that the start up is really bogged down with all the DELL bloatware i.e. QuickDellset, Dellguide, Bluetooth etc. Start - RUN - MSCONFIG - Startup tab Untick what you don't need - this doesn't remove the programs, just stops them loading on startup. If you chnage your mind you can tick them again.

2008-05-19 05:21:00 | Do what pctek said and remove all the things that it tries to load at startup- probably a lot! Also, what AV did you get with it? If its Norton, then that has to be the 1st thing to go.

2008-05-19 05:25:00 | The first thing I'd do when I get a new pc that I didnt build and is not an alieanware one, is to do a clean install of whatever OS it came with. Dell is nice and supplies an OS disk. Use it to reinstall Vista, and remove all the juck that they give you. Reinstall those that you actually need. | SPARTAN 860 (2618) | |
