| 670278 | 2008-05-18 01:17:00 | I think your machine might be a bit stuck. I had old machines in the past .. laptops. Because they are non upgradeable this is the last one I am going to get, I this is my 4th laptop in a row, never had my own PC other than a shared one. I don't need the portability. Like you when I had the Pentium One and the Pentium two, I looked into it but I hit a brick wall. Then I got a Pentium three with Cardbus PC Cards but still USB 1.1. Wireless needs USB2. Wireless also needs 32bit Cardbus and not just plain ordinary PCMCIA (PC Cards). There might be the rare vendor which makes it for 16bit PC Cards but I am not sure. Dicks Smiths will be able to tell you if its 32 bit or 16 bit - on their website. The way I am getting wireless right now is using a wireless router and its plugged into my laptop via network cable - the other computer links via it wirelessly. It also saves me getting a 32bit PC Card. Check if your one supports cardbus, my laptop came with Windows 98 but I chose to use Windows 2000 instead. |

| 670281 | 2008-05-18 02:37:00 | It all depends on what you want to do with it. Simple "work" is no problem. I have used a (DSE) USB WiFi unit perfectly successfully on an old Compaq laptop with W98. USB 1 is OK -- I just use it for printing, and sometimes VNC. I recently bought a PCMCIA WIFi card which does "g" as well as "b". It installed and appears to be working OK, but I haven't got any other "G" stuff yet. Have a look at Trademe. Some people might be upgrading and disposing of their older stuff. You won't be playing networked multiplayer games with that machine, so you don't need gigabit speed. :D |
