390121 2005-09-22 01:47:00 Let's have another fight.
:D

Maori activist Tame Iti has ditched plans to call 300 witnesses for his trial on a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm in a public place.

Yeah, whatever.

But then this:

Iti has requested a Maori interpreter fluent in the Tuhoe dialect be present, indicating several of the witnesses intend to give their evidence in Maori.

Given the controversy over those Arab (or whatever) women insisting on having their faces covered while giving evidence, what do you think about this one?

Is the jury entitled to hear evidence in English?
Can't really use the "You're in an NZ court so you must abide by NZ legal processes" argument in this case.

Hmmm...

Hm-mm...
I understand Maori is an official language and therefore can be used in court or parliament etc.

390124 2005-09-22 02:04:00 Yup it is indeed an official language .

And nothing the court/judge/govt can do about it .

Iti has spoken in Maori before, so it's nothing new .

Thats why they have interpreters for people who dont understand other languages . In the courts .

390125 2005-09-22 02:06:00 wow.....just wow.

Does anyone have a wet bus ticket?

390126 2005-09-22 02:07:00 Agreed

And you can give evidence in any language you like provided you have an interpreter. That happens anywhere there are immigrants. In California you'd need a working knowledge of Spanish for the lower courts.

However with an "official" language you can also use it to address the court on arguments. That wouldn't be allowed for an unofficial language.

390128 2005-09-22 04:17:00 You might, however, be turned down if you asked for a tlhlngon Hol interpreter. Graham L (2)

Bit of a difference. HAving their faces covered means its not really possible to identify them. Him speaking Maori isn't a problem because there will be the interpreter so the jury if not Maori speakers will still be able to understand what he is going on about.
I have friends that speak Maori to me all the time, well phrases and words they use commonly and expect me to know what they are I guess, I just say what? and they translate. Maybe I should start using some of my "native" language words back? Trouble is my accent would be completely terrible and I'd have to start carrying a Hungarian dictionary around, hahaha

Nothing wrong with your question Peter, it is always worth asking what other people think.
