389065 2005-09-18 00:55:00 I did, Third time. Always a worry bulding up to it.Opening all the boxes, checking off this avalanche of pads, forms and evelopes. Specialvotes are the only bummer. God knows why people can't get themselves on the roll or pre-vote like has been blasted at us on the tele. Was good fun on the day though and we got our results in by about 8.40.

What struck me was the good-naturedness of everyone who came in to our (small) two person polling place. We had all shades of politics from far out there to far out the other way, yet everyone seemed in a good mood, and were helpful and cooperative to one another. There were a few pro-this or that wisecracks but they got as good as they gave, and all in a freindly spirit.

Isn't that a wonderful thing about our.country? Other places they chop each other''s heads off and blow up the ballot boxes. That's why I agree with post quote from the herald in the other thread, who said democracy isn't a theory, it's a practice.

Anyway, I enjoyed it, and made a few hunnered bucks. (Earnt)

EDIT: That extract from the herald was spot on Kiwi_TT.

389066 2005-09-18 01:14:00 I haven't before but it sounds like there is some easy money to be made. How do we get ourselves on the list if we want to do this next time? Alpha (3520)
389067 2005-09-18 01:32:00 Easy money it ain't. Easier for the issuing Officers than for the Polling Place Managers because the latter is the one responsable for making it all work on the day and then once the doors close (which is when the real work begins) tallying up all the votes for different electorates, gotta be both fast and accurate, phone the results and then pack up.
Packing up means things like totalling all the ballot rec'd minus issues plus counted plus leftovers for each electorate and issuing officer and the....well on and on. There are lots of different documents and reconciliation sheets that all have to be spot on. (Well they did allow a degree of tolerance this tine, fist time ever, but we got it right anyway).

Try it. Get in touch with the Electoral Commission under the Min of Justice. They don't have a suplus of workers.

When there's an elction the Elec. Comm. goes from a staff of about 100 to a staff of 14,000 in two months. I reckon that's an admirable bit of organisation. And it works. And part of what you get paid for is to make it work. You've got to check everything yourself, go the polling place, get codes, keys, all that. Check the deliverd stuff as well as what you pick up yourself. It's a pro-active position. HQ simply cannot cope with people ringing up and moaning that they didn't get this this or that or don't know what the EP 784/TL1 form is for. You've got to do it yourself.

That's insane!? How big of a tolerance was allowed?

I just had Chris Carter on my doorstep giving me a hand done box of fancy chocolates.
We had a Labour sign on our fence....
On the other hand, even though I voted Labour, he didn't know that and in fact no other party asked to put a sign up here.

Don't panic. It's only 1 out in up to 300, 2 up to 600 etc. And this is only the preliminary count, it's all done again at HQ.

(Long time getting back, been a storm up here, power's been off since 3pm y'day. Guy building a house where all us locals said he shouldn't, (windy knoll) got all his ply cladding blown half a kilometer into the mudflats. Tsk)
