Moved house a week ago. Have previously had the Go Large plan, and got them to xfer this to new home. When I first set up PC, was amazed that I was getting line speeds 4100+.

Since then, has been all down hill. From early afternoon to (late) late at night, getting speeds below dialup (no... I'm not exagerating).

Complained to Telecom, and they did the usual test from their end, showing nothing wrong. My modem connect speed is apprx 7000, so no problems there. They got me to do the speedtest thing over three days, and send them the results

The customer service staff suggested that I change OFF the Go Large plan, as that might be the problem. I've explained that I will change, if that is the problem, but they just don't know.

I've now been told that, having sent back in the results of the speedtest (which was mostly 'Test incomplete', as it was too slow), that it will take at least three weeks for them to 'investigate' the issue.

In the meantime, I'm stuck with a virtually unusable internet connection.

Sorry for the rant, but I'm pissed off.

Suggestions/thoughts....

But most ISP's arent that fast during the afternoon / evening.

Even Xnet goes pretty slow, most evenings

Because of traffic / amount of people on the same ISP as you at the same time

670652 2008-05-19 04:34:00 how far do you live from the exchange? Also has your exchanged been upgraded for adsl2+? (check at chorus.co.nz) As far as i know, go large is the only plan without a data cap for $49.95.
I'm on go large. During the day, speed is as high a 4mbits.

Be aware also that if you leave go large, you wont be able to switch back.

670653 2008-05-19 04:40:00 You're on the leechers plan what do you expect. So many people are sharing the small amount of bandwidth available to the Go Large users that most get horrible speeds. Xtra is the only ISP who doesn't have the balls to kick everyone off the plan, every other ISP had to. trinsic (6945)
670654 2008-05-19 05:57:00 what constitutes horrible? Admittedly, I only get about 10-20kbytes/s per http stream. Use multiple streams however, and my maximum speed during peak hours is about 140kbytes/s

During the day or outside peak times, the speeds will definitely be higher. Also I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed, but just before 7pm sometimes, my internet completely dies momentarily. When it reconnects, the speed is incredible. This has only happened once though. I'm guessing at 7pm, there is a switchover of some sort?

My contacts who work at telecom also tell me there is apparently no traffic management on Go large. There are also tricks you can do to uncap your speed at the exchange, but I dont know about the details for that, only that it is possible.
