669889 2008-05-16 01:53:00 Hi, my PC had a virus and it has now hopefully been cleaned. However I now do not have a desktop or Taskbar, just the wall paper shows once windows has loaded. By using 'cntr/alt/del' I do get the Task Manager which lets me open and close programs, including going to the inetrnet/web. The only help I have found is promisses by Registry type tools, all of who want payment first and I am not sure that would resolve the problem? I did try a re-install of XP and updated DX, but still no Desktop or icons. louisbotha (5905)
669890 2008-05-16 01:56:00 If youve formatted and reinstalled XP you have to right mouse on the desktop then properties / desktop / customise desktop.

And tick my computer / whatever for the icon to appear.

Then click on start / right mouse / properties to configure the start menu etc

669892 2008-05-16 02:15:00 You mean right clicking on the desktop doesnt work??

Sounds like something is stuffed then .

NOT a good idea using any registry cleaner

Some can make things worse

Did u reinstall over XP, (by the sounds of it, you did), or did you did a clean install?

Get hijackthis in my sig below run it click on scan the system and save a log .

Copy and paste (altho this may not work if right click doesnt work in anything) .

Get trojan remover in my sig install it click on update then scan

Then select all options under the utilities menu

Does windows firewall open?? What virus scanner have you got?

669893 2008-05-16 02:17:00 Windows explorer isn't running.

Ctrl+alt+delete, new task, explorer.exe will work IF the windows installation is ok. Sounds like its stuffed.

Does safe mode work?

Did you format the HDD before reinstalling XP?
