| 389718 | 2005-09-20 09:39:00 | This new term, or old term maybe, has me stumped, i dont understand google info, so can someone explain what a zone 1 or zone 4 dvd is? means or works? I bought a zone 4 dvd, not knowing what it was, and hoped it played on my player, it works just fine. but was told i could have trouble with others of different zones? Is it something to do with age of movies? :stare: beetle |

| 389720 | 2005-09-20 10:03:00 | It was basically a standard forced by the movie companies to try and stagger releases. If they release it in the states as a Zone 1, it won't play on Zone 4 players in NZ (most of them) so people can't import or pirate (y'arrr) movies before they are officially released in your region. It's basically bollocks. A lot of players can be fuxxed with so they'll play any zone etc. Edit: www.totaldvd.net - might help |

| 389721 | 2005-09-20 10:04:00 | The different zones for DVD were made to prevent piracy . . . BUT there are ways of getting around this . Unless u have a multizone DVD player, and if you only have a DVD player, that plays Zone 4, it wont play anything else / any other zone . Zone 1 is US |

| 389724 | 2005-09-20 11:05:00 | As already noted the regions or zones were created so DVD's would only work in the area they were purchased in, this isn't so much for the sake of piracy but so they could charge more for the product if they could get away with it, People importing DVD's from cheaper markets hits them in the pocket (by so little that it wouldn't even get close to the expense of deviding the world into 7 regions) Still, every cent counts when your a world encompassing money hoarding machine . Anyhow, I wouldn't worry about it, nearly every DVD in NZ will play on NZ machines, The Video retal stores have a habit of importing cheap stock that won't play due to region encoding but Im sure the backlash has an an effect on them, Ive told them my views once or twice and the numbers of non-compatible movies has dropped (in the store I go to at least) and they have them clearly labelled . . . . . . which ruined a little scam I had going for getting free movies . . . . . |

This is based on a non pc dvd . a standalone / tv one . does this make a difference . . . . . sorry for the confusion, This is all new info for me and thank you to all those who took the time to reply . What would a dvd zone be from singapore then? my standalone dvd player has played some and its fine, but the kids movie from another post i had, stops, freezes or what ever, that had something to do with depth reading? is that different from zones as well? must go reread that thread . . . . . I as of yet dont have a dvd writer player in peach, . . . . . . yet being the word . thanxs beetle |

| 389726 | 2005-09-20 11:09:00 | Chances are your DVD player is multi-region. The kids disc pausing at the layer transistion has nothing to do with the region, It it did it would display a region error and not play at all. |

| 389727 | 2005-09-20 11:15:00 | Which store? the one at top of ave? or next one along? ......no vid store in wang east is there?:p ???? i was there recently and noticed the stickers and thats one reason why i asked.....didnt understand what they were for. I had to get new vid card the other day as lost other one....and a new password to go with it......more things to remember............. watching more dvd since getting new cheap player than before....much better than playstation dvd playing..... we live and we learn. lol :D beetle |
