| 389580 | 2005-09-20 04:56:00 | A History. ISI or Image space incorperated have been making racing Sims for many years, SCGT being considered a classic and due to the fact it was able to be modded is still alive and well, People are still playing it and its many years old now. After the success of this game ISI were contracted by EA to churn out the yearly releases of their Formula 1 franchise. These games met success not only because of how well made they were but because ISI (without being paid to do so,and as far as I know with no correspondence with EA) added in more and more features with each release to enablke modders to add extra content. By the time the last game in the series was released (F1C) it was possible to download hundreds of cars and tracks and entire Mods that changed the entire game interface and content. Some of the stand out releases were the Aussie V8 Mod, GTR (now a stand alone game) Lemans, European sports car mods plus many many more...You could even fang a F1 car up pikes peak hillclimb if you were so inclined. Sadly Sony bought the exclusive rights to the F1 Franchise for the next decade and ISI were let lose, Lisences for other series were all snapped up by EA for their arcade racer "Race Driver" or either two expensive or too much of a niche series to be worthy of the finiancial outlay. Meanwhile Papy who were once one the highest regarded Race-sim dev's lost their Nascar lisence, Disbanded and then regrouped as a grouple called First Racing, They then started to sue the racing community for Modding their last game. Things were looking bleak, Race-Sims had nearly dissaperad from the market, The devs in some cases had turned on its very customers.....Dark Days indeed.... |

| 389581 | 2005-09-20 06:21:00 | The biggest positive to happen was that Simbin (who were enthusists from all around the world who banded together to make a mod for ISI's F12002, That being GTR, one of the most professional mods to ever appear) created a company and signed a deal which gave them a legit franchise. Being able to create game content but not a game engine they lisenced ISI's engine and created the GTR game which you can buy at nearly any shop that stocks games. This opened up a new avenue of revenue for ISI and set the gears in motion for what is happening right now, ISI decided to build an entire new race-sim game engine that would improve on the old model in everyway. Designed from the get go to be a full DX9 system and to have the best possible netcode (something missing in all ISI titles and poorly implemented into GTR). This new engine was lisenced to Simbin for its soon to be released GT Legends. ISI themselves had their sights on the race sim/mod commmunity and were hard at work building their own game....rFactor. The engine not only provides near perfect online play, Career modes, day/night transistions but works off real data. Meaning the mod groups can enter real world data and the cars (when done well) will act like their real world counterparts. The game also allows for multiple track sets and car sets to be grafted onto it meaning that nearly every worthwhile racing series is coming to rFactor, This will be the only game in the near future where you can race a stunning set of 2005 Formula one cars, or the upcoming A1gp, and just about any other series you can think of. Whats lacking? The game is only a starting point in its current state, Lacking a publisher the game can only be purchased online and presumibly due to wanting to keep the download smallish and because the "real" content will be provided by the community there is only 12 or so track configurations and 7 different classes of cars. Also while the graphics of the game are fine, they are not even close to what the community has in development (the screenies in the first post are of an upcoming mod) What do you get for your money? The best race-sim engine ever built, and more content coming from the community then you can shake a stick at, Combined with rock solid net-play. Ever seen a game skinned with actual photographs?, Its on its way....Screenshots will be posted. Whats it cost? 24 pounds....so roughly $60 NZ dollars Download is approx 400mb http://www.rfactor.net/ |
