389566 2005-09-20 01:50:00 My son plays online games a lot with our newish broadband, and as expected the 10GB cap disappears quite fast. Is there any way one can play the games online without losing such a lot of bandwith the same time?

I don't know whether this is a stupid question or not so please forgive me if it is

389567 2005-09-20 02:32:00 All depends.
You can log on to www.jetstreamgames.co.nz with their login (You'd need to change that in the router settings).
Or get another plan with another ISP that has better caps.
Actrix have daily caps so that you are not waiting for the month to be up.
Orcon has one where you can keep giving them another $10 for my data.

389568 2005-09-20 02:51:00 Battlefield2 would be the only popular online game at the moment that would put your cap in danger without playing all day every day. Xtra has servers for quite a few games on their jetstreamgames realm, but lately games like battlefield 2 & CSS don't work without a connection to the central server. Greven (91)
389569 2005-09-20 04:18:00 Yup... BF2 is a bandwidth hog. By myself with no other downloading, I managed to exceed my cap which I put down to BF2 gameplaying.

I can't help myself though!

Some online games consume bugger all bandwidth, ie those that connect peer-to-peer, or directly via modem-to-modem. Others that suck off a central server can be enormous hogs.

I've been an avid online gamer for a while, and in over 3 years never exceeded 5 gigs of bandwidth, including all my other online activities/work etc.

389572 2005-09-21 18:28:00 More practical solution! Restrict your son from playing online games, give him a book to read instead. Education, sarel...

Cheers :)

389574 2005-09-21 21:35:00 Do the unranked servers require a continuous connection to EA? If not, he can probably play on the Xtra unranked servers while connected to the jetstreamgames realm. Greven (91)

Some Wolfenstein Returning crap (I am not 100% sure). Will find out ho'. Greg - can't do, he can't afford B/B on his own
