671116 2008-05-20 09:03:00 Hi all,

Can you peeps tell me what some good free DVD player software for the PC? What do you use or recommend? Preferably with 5.1 support.

Cheers,

Vic.

671117 2008-05-20 09:16:00 The VLC Player (www.videolan.org) supports just about any known format, DVD included.

Another one to try is Windows Media Player Classic (www.afterdawn.com) - DONT let the name fool you, its not the same old media player windows had - it plays just about anything and as I have found out a lot more features than VLC Player.

Dont know about the 5: 1 though

671119 2008-05-20 10:44:00 It comes down to filter/decoders for 5.1 support rather than player. Look into Haali Media Splitter (haali.cs.msu.ru) which quite a few people use with MPC.

As always, I recommend Media Player Classic (tibrium.neuf.fr/) and ffdshow (http:) (both links to the most recent releases of both projects).

671120 2008-05-20 11:03:00 Another vote for VLC.. Plays every video (and audio) file under the sun, plus just a few more for good measure. Plays DVD's - whether they be on the HDD, or on physical DVD. Also doesn't play those annoying piracy things on DVD's, it goes straight to the root DVD menu.
The only issue with VLC on windows is it's broken support for S/PDIF - if you have a digital connection to your speakers (optical or coax) and want to play AC3 (Dolby Digital) and/or DTS over it, DO NOT use VLC. If you use standard 3-jack analog connections you will be fine.

671121 2008-05-21 00:11:00 I've just started using GOM Player, and it's really nice - is this (www.imagef1.net.nz) the option you're looking for? nofam (9009)
