392073 2005-09-29 11:20:00 We have a surplus to requirements terrestial dish thanks to switching to ADSL.

Questions:
- Can these dishes be used for any other purpose?
- Do they have any resale value?

392074 2005-09-29 11:24:00 depends on size. if large enough you can use them for sky eg at the bach. price...a few beers ;) the problem is most 2nd hand ones the LNB is often stuffed which cost 3/4 the price of a whole dish (size and brand depending). tweak'e (69)
392075 2005-09-29 11:38:00 Good question. Yes me too. Well it is a ultra satellite dish that's now surplus as like you, I have switched to ADSL.

It's a large dish, 90cm I think. Bigger than the Sky ones I've noticed.

Now I see tweake's reply. Depressing. The LNB maybe stuffed. Well it was working a few weeks ago. Only worth a few beers. Even more depressing. Never mind, it's available here for a few beers to anyone who wants to grab it.

392076 2005-09-29 11:53:00 Please excuse my ignorance oh master... but what is a LNB?

Mine is also quite large but I can't quite estimate the size sticking my head out of the window in the dark. It was working up to mid July when we switched to ADSL so it probably still works now.

Any dish collectors out there who, for the price of a few extra beers, wants to decorate their bach in dishes?

392077 2005-09-29 12:08:00 Convert it to a wireless antenna then sell it on Trade me Rob99 (151)
392078 2005-09-29 12:09:00 LNB is the box thingy sticking out the front of the dish on the arm. it contains a bunch of electronics which don't like getting wet and naturally being out in the weather its only a matter of time before the seals break and let water in. plus a lot of idiot installers don't seal the connection on it so the connection rusts out which means a new LNB is required.

btw LNB stands for Low Noise Block converter.

392079 2005-09-29 12:38:00 Thank you master, I am now much wiser.

And Rob, I was thinking TradeMe if it had any value at all (along with a multitude of other "accumulations") but had no idea it could be converted to wireless.

A search on Google came up with a number of pages with this (www.wwc.edu) as the first link. Thanks for the suggestion.
